1. In the name of God Amen. The fourth day of January in the year of Our Lord God 1519 [1520] I John Smalwoode the elder alias John Wynchecombe of the parish of St Nicholas in Newbury in the diocese of Salisbury of whole and perfect mind make my testament and last will in manner and form following.

2. First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God to our blessed lady Saint Mary the Virgin and to all the holy company of heaven and my body to be buried in our lady chancel within the parish church of Newbury aforesaid by Alice my wife and a stone to be laid upon us both.

3. Also I bequeath to our mother church of Salisbury 12d.

4. Also I bequeath to the high altar of the said church of Newbury for my offerings negligently forgotten 12d.

5. Also I bequeath to Jesus altar within the said parish church 8d.

6. Also I bequeath to Our Lady altar in the said church 8d.

7. Item I bequeath to St Thomas altar in the same church 8d.

8. Also I bequeath to every altar besides in the said parish church 4d.

9. Also I give and bequeath of Joan my wife 100 marks sterling and my stuff of household.

10. Also I give and bequeath to Joan my wife all my cattle and the wood that lies in the midst of the Culverhouse1 with all my corn and hay.

11. Also I give and bequeath unto her half my plate.

12. Moreover, I will that the said Joan shall have during her natural life all such lands and tenements with their appurtenances as I hold by indenture of the College of Windsor except and only reserved to John my son all the racks and tenters as there now stand within a close called the Culverhouse with free liberty and passage in and out to him and to his assigns in and for the occupying of the same and after the decease of the said Joan I will that the said lands and tenements with their appurtenances wholly remain to the said John my son during the terms comprised in the said indentures thereof made.
