Translation

5 March, before the lord Doctor [Andrew] Perne, the deputy of the lord vice-chancellor

John Marley of Cambridge, gentleman, against Nevell Hayes, cook

On which etc., Marley alleges that he lent to a certain [William] Austen, Bachelor of Arts of Corpus Christi College and pupil of Master [Robert] Taxton, a cloak bought from Austen's father in the city of Canterbury. For proof of his allegation, Marley produces a certain Samuel Beale, Bachelor of Arts, who asserted that Master Taxton, now being sick, wanted the same Beale to give evidence before the lord vice-chancellor that Taxton had been the tutor of the said Austen when the said Austen sold the cloak with the consent of his friends and the said Taxton to the said Marley's disadvantage. In the presence of the said Hayes, acknowledging that the said Austen had pledged the said cloak to Hayes and his wife for the sum of 13s. 4d. in cash lent to Austen, and for the sum of 13s. 4d. worth of food which was delivered to him. Whereupon the lord deputy decreed the said cloak to be restored to the same Marley and condemned the same Hayes to the restoration of the same and to the costs of the court.
