Summary
As I write my hands are still trembling with the joy of today’s news. I came home from work to find a letter from Alice dated 26 December. She tells me that ‘Lene’ – by whom she means Else! – has taken on the care of some children in a beautiful mountainous area and is in good health in all respects. This is wonderful news in itself but especially amid the other daily reports of bombing over Berlin and other German cities. I rejoice on her behalf for her being in some haven of safety, for the near future at least. Might this be a good omen for the year ahead? If only that could be true! In the meantime my mind teems with worries over other matters remaining to be dealt with, such as needing to sell some large items of luggage,1 on top of having to face trouble at work.
