Summary

As we have seen, a number of sermons in several booklets of Cambridge, Jesus College, MS 13 also occur in a major sermon collection from Worcester Cathedral Priory, made at about the same time and bearing the contemporary inscription “Liber Beate Marie Wigornie.” Worcester Cathedral MS F.126 is a large codex of thick parchment leaves written by several Anglicana hands with Secretary features, of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century. It is fairly regularly constructed and has a medieval foliation. The volume is essentially a very large sermon collection, one of the surprisingly great number of sermon books that were made for and stood in the medieval Benedictine priory at Worcester and can still be found in the cathedral library. Besides sermons it also contains what appears to be an academic lecture (f. 1ra–b), the Confessio Magistri et Fratris Iohannis Tyssyngtone de ordine minorum (ff. 19ra–23rb), and a copy of the Liber sextus decretalium (ff. 280ra–294rb). Immediately after the sermons, on ff. 278–279, appears an index that lists the sermons in the order in which they stand in the codex, giving their occasion, thema, and folio. Earlier in the volume (ff. 235v–238rb) occurs a “Tabula de notabilioribus que continentur in presenti volumine,” covering subjects from “Antethemata” and “Abstinencia” to “Ydria” and referring to folio and column (a–d) of the sermons that appear in the manuscript both before and after this table; its information seems to be generally based on marginal annotations.
