Summary
The National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg preserves a beautiful and fascinating manuscript whose decoration suggested to me, when I first held it in my hands and had the precious opportunity to study it at length, a possible alternative to the common scholarly understanding of the beginnings of the tradition of medieval book illumination that I had learned and that I then shared.
