Summary

This appendix contains biographies of the two men who sat as members of the ‘Other House’ in 1658-9 who had not been previously elected to the House of Commons and therefore are not otherwise covered by the biographies in these volumes. For a list of members of the ‘Other House’ see the Introductory Survey, Vol. I, Appendix 14.

Estate: inherited estate centred on Newburgh Priory, Coxwold, Yorks., estimated as being worth £5,000 in 1657; purchase of New Hall, Essex, as jointure lands for 2nd wife, June 1658.

Will: 14 Nov. 1699, pr. 26 May 1701.

The Belasyse family were among the greater gentry of Yorkshire, and were closely related to the Fairfaxes and the Cholmeleys. Sir Henry Belasyse† had represented Thirsk in the later Elizabethan Parliaments, and his son, Thomas†, continued the tradition through to 1627, when he was created Baron Fauconberg of Yarm by Charles I.
