Summary
Introductory remarks
The following lexicon lists abbreviations of serials and periodicals cited in the bibliographic entries along with the introductory digests in Part II of this work.
The standard for abbreviations largely follows that in Botanico-periodicum-huntianum (B-P-H), edited by G. H. M. Lawrence et al. (1968, Pittsburgh: Hunt Library), and its supplement, Botanico-periodicum-huntianum supplementum (B-P-H/S), edited by G. Bühheim et al. (1991, Pittsburgh: Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation). Together the two volumes represent the most comprehensive currently available reference specific to the field. The original B-P-H was, however, not without errors and moreover in terms of the present work was distinctly incomplete, even accounting for the lapse of time from its publication through 1980. It had in fact originally been conceived and developed in relation to the retrospective Bibliographia huntiana project (a definitive critical bibliography of botanical literature from 1730 through 1840) as well as – to some extent – Taxonomic Literature by Frans Stafleu (1967, Zug). [For B-P-H/S coverage was greatly expanded, utilizing a variety of additional sources; there remain, nevertheless, a number of omissions.]
For the original version of these listings, therefore, other sources had to be consulted. These included: British union-catalogue of periodicals (BUCOP) and its Supplement to 1960 (5 vols., 1955–62, London); BUCOP New serial titles 1950–70, 1971–5, and annual volumes from 1976 through 1980 (as well as Subject guide to New serial titles 1950–70); Scientific serials in Australian libraries (3 vols. in loose-leaf, 1959–61, with added and revised pages to 1979); Union list of serials in New Zealand libraries (2nd edn.
