Summary

Raymond Saleilles was one of the more significant and influential legal scholars of the Belle Époque. The unifying element of his monumental work is a reflection on legal methodology and the theory of interpretation. His méthode historique, that is, a hermeneutical approach of historical–evolutionary character, made it possible to overcome the exegetic mentality and to achieve a steady development and adaptation of the legal system to the relevant political–social context. This new approach allowed the liberal legal system to become open to emerging social demands, favoring the transition from the political democracy of the Revolution to social democracy, and establishing the legal basis of the French welfare state.
