Richard, duke of York, earl of March and Ulster, lord of Wigmore and of Clare, to all to whom these present letters may come, greeting. Know that we have given and granted and by these presents confirm to the warden of the convent and to the friars of the house of Friars Minor of Babwell next to Bury St Edmunds, in consideration of charity and for the souls of our noble ancestors and for our salvation, and for the building up of the same house of Friars Minor of our and our aforesaid ancestors’ patronage and foundation (and there exists a licence previously had and obtained of the king), ten acres of arable land and ten acres of meadow, with part in Fornham All Saints and Fornham St Martin in the county of Suffolk, the same ten acres of land and ten acres of meadow to be had and held by the same warden and convent and to the friars and their successors, in free, pure and perpetual alms in perpetuity, without any return or other burden to us and our heirs to be rendered or made thereupon. And we, the aforesaid duke and our aforesaid heirs will warrant, acquit and defend in perpetuity the aforesaid ten acres of land and ten acres of meadow to the aforesaid warden, friars and convent against all persons. In testimony of which thing we have led our seal to be appended. Witness to these Thomas, lord of Scales, Sir William Oldhall our councillor and chamberlain, Sir Andrew Ogard, Sir Walter Devreux, Sir John Barre, knight, Sir Edmund Mulso, Sir Robert Conyers, Sir William Drury, Sir John Wynkefeld, gentleman, Sir John Harleston, Sir John Denston, Thomas Yonge, Edmund Wychyngham, Thomas Geddyng, Sir John Clopton and Robert Cole, chaplain and others. Given at Bury aforesaid, on the last day of February in the twenty-fifth year of the reign of our dread lord King Henry the Sixth after the Conquest of England.
