Summary

Election Violence in Zimbabwe: Human Rights, Politics and Power recommends that the current Zanu PF and future governments of Zimbabwe take seriously their first and foremost onerous role and duty of care to promote the respect of human rights. Regardless of their political affiliation and background, all citizens have an inviolable right to life, to be defended and protected by government during and inbetween elections, neither being labelled as enemies nor victims of the state. Citizens’ internationally recognised rights include rights to respect, dignity, fair treatment and decent livelihoods. Other rights that government must guard and honour in law and practice include the right to assemble, association, movement and unfettered choice in political representation.
