Summary

Money can be defined by its economic functions, its physical forms, its quantity, or by the institutional arrangements supporting its creation, transfer and management. These different viewpoints are introduced to point to the challenges involved in discussing money and its role in the economy. The Global Financial Crisis has raised questions about the current and future status of money. Monetary reform is one approach among many others that emerges from a public debate trying to make sense of what happened during the crisis and what lessons should be drawn from it.
