The commander departed for Lisbon, along with those who served him. The Master received him well, despite the fact that Pero Rodrigues and Álvaro Gonçalves had already written to tell him everything that had happened. Vasco Porcalho lodged a serious complaint with the Master, asserting that he had been greatly dishonoured and that this was out of envy and not because there was any truth in what they alleged.

The Master dismissed the whole incident with conciliatory words, personally made sure that he was well treated and continued in that fashion for several days. On one occasion when the Master was at table, the commander was waiting on him and at the end of the meal he duly poured water over his hands. After the tablecloths had been removed, the Master called the commander to him, saying: ‘Commander, don't distress yourself about what has happened, because those who brought it about believed that they were doing it to serve my best interests. Nevertheless, it is my wish to place even greater trust in you than before. It is also my wish that your honour be restored and that they should hand back to you the castle of Vila Viçosa, which you previously held. If you are disloyal to me, you will be the vilest traitor in all the world, what with your being a brother in my Order and one of my knights and devising treachery against me! That is something I could never believe, nor do I believe that God so created you that you would strive to bring such disgrace on your name. I shall send you with letters to hand to Álvaro Gonçalves and Pero Rodrigues, as well as to the honourable citizens of the town, commanding them to hand back to you your castle, just as you previously held it. That is because I deem you to be both honourable and loyal. Indeed, I believe you to be a man who will carry out his duty and I shall confer favours on you for doing so. I command you to establish a firm friendship with those knights. They shall honour you on my account, and you shall treat them and the town community in the same way.’
