The following day Nuno Álvares summoned most of those accompanying him, announcing that he wished to discuss with them a number of matters that would both benefit them and be of service to their liege lord the Master of Avis. He began as follows:

‘My friends, I’m about to tell you what thoughts I’ve been having concerning our enterprise. It is important, nay sensible, that from time to time we should receive messages from the Master and also that he should receive messages from us. Similarly, we should receive frequent information about our enemies, so as to enable us to avoid any harm they might inflict on us and to hinder their attempts to do so with as little risk as possible. With regard to such matters it is important for us to have our own council, in order to reach a decision on every issue and on what we consider might best be of service to our liege lord the Master, as well as bringing honour to you all. However, if we were to constitute a council from everyone now here present, that would be quite preposterous, and its deliberations would swiftly become known to those outside the council, which does not befit good warriors. As I see it, therefore, the best way to proceed will be that, when such issues as these crop up and require your advice, I should discuss the matter with a group of you, so that, with your agreement, we can decide on what you think is the best way ahead. However, were I to choose a number of you myself, in the belief that they were the best men to advise me, then those who are their equals would at once take umbrage and would be forever disgruntled, maintaining that out of disregard for them I had not chosen them for the council and had not considered them good enough. Therefore, I think it best if those from Lisbon elect from their number those they deem suitable to discuss confidential matters with me. The same applies to those from Évora, Beja and other towns, if there are any; in such a way I shall be able to hold council meetings with them as is appropriate. Afterwards, they can explain to you whatever needs to be revealed and can require of you whatever things pertain to each and every one of you.
