Summary

The other kind of martyr who accompanied me, whose commemoration should last forever, were those who remained strong and very firm, with pure intention and without duplicitous words, not being moved from what they had begun by any dangers or threats. The names of many of these can no longer be found in order to commemorate them, and even if they could all be found it would create such a great procession that it would be excessive rather than necessary and well ordered. Therefore, these few are put here, not in order of their nobility, as we have already said, but made into a little sheaf, as if for easier harvesting, and are representative of themselves and all others.

The Master of the Order of Christ, Dom Lopo Dias de Sousa, who, being the nephew of Queen Leonor and having more lands in Portugal than the Master of Avis, as a true Portuguese and seeing that the King of Castile had broken the treaties, declared himself for Portugal and served the Master as a magistrate until he was captured while trying to besiege Torres Novas, which had declared for Castile.
