Summary

Introduction

“Without the private sector, sustainable development will remain only a distant dream. We now understand that both business and society stand to benefit from working together. And more and more we are realizing that it is only by mobilizing the corporate sector that we can make significant progress. The corporate sector has the finances, the technology and the management to make all this happen. The corporate sector need not wait for governments to take decisions for them to take initiatives”.

– Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, 2002

“More and more now we're looking at the concept of global sustainability, and what that means for the fundamental global drivers that are going to change the nature of our business. What implications is that going to have on us and our businesses, and how will we go about doing our business, in terms of closed systems and re-circulation systems and other sorts of things? And how can we impact some of the social problems facing the planet?”

Canadian Manufacturing Executive, 2005

These words from United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and an executive from heavy manufacturing industry illustrate the growing alignment of global and organizational leaders regarding the potential for positive transformation in the relationship between business and society. Over the past decade, scholars in the field of organizational sustainability have identified significant opportunities for value creation by firms that pursue the goal of sustainable development (Hart 1997; Hart and Milstein 2003; Kurucz, Colbert and Wheeler 2008; Wheeler, Colbert and Freeman, 2003).
