  • • Can you recommend any books on time management?

Starting points

  • • Students are increasingly asking for advice on skills relating to studying and writing. Some international students may come from an education system with different expectations. New and mature students may feel uncertain about their existing skills.

  • • Many universities have student advice centres that create or recommend their own materials, including apps. The resources listed below cover the key topics of Presentation skills, Time management and Writing. Other good sources are in the Courses and Qualifications chapter as general study skills resources are often available. Other related topics include Citing, Referencing and Plagiarism and Literature Searching .

Recommended resources

Presentation skills

Students may need to prepare for group presentations and seminars and PhD and early career researchers for posters or lectures. These resources link to general guides on public speaking and presentations. Ask your local IT support about availability and training on specific tools such as PowerPoint or Prezi.

TED Talks [Basic]

www.ted.com

TED talks are short (less than 18 minutes) from experts covering a range of science and social science topics. Be inspired by the most popular examples and consult their playlists of tips on public speaking.

Toastmasters International

A useful collection of articles and tips on preparing and delivering speeches and presentations.

Time management

Students from all disciplines may require advice on prioritising their time. Here are some recommended general resources. LearnHigher [Basic]

National network that aims to promote learning development in the UK higher education sector. Its website provides free access to a wealth of resources on studying at university. These cover critical reading, writing and time management skills. They include worksheets and lesson plans for teachers and tips for students.

Mind Tools

www.mindtools.com

A management training organisation whose website offers free access to a suite of practical tips, guidance and app recommendations covering a range of skills, including time management for increasing effectiveness at work and study. Subscribers have full access to online training.

Writing skills

Students who ask about style guides often require advice on Citing, Referencing and Plagiarism. They can be referred to the sources listed in that chapter.
