• • Maths is not everyone's favourite subject! Many queries come from students studying other topics who need to calculate or understand statistical tables. In these circumstances, check if any local support is available and try consulting the Study guides.

• • New research is often published in the form of working papers. Serious researchers should be reminded to check these in addition to the journal article indexes. See also the Grey Literature chapter.

American Mathematical Society (AMS)

Founded in 1888 and covering all branches of mathematics, the AMS website has resources for students, indexes of journal articles and conference listings. Its Proceedings and Transactions series are now on open access.

International Mathematical Union (IMU)

International organisation that seeks to promote co-operation in mathematics scholarship. Its website is a good starting point for tracing information on national maths organisations worldwide.

London Mathematical Society (LMS)

Established in 1865, its website has advice on mathematics education and career opportunities, plus free access to its Transactions and information about its library and archives.

Sigma Network

Professional network for those working in maths and statistics support in UK HE. Excellent resources section with advice and links to resources for tutors on different skills.

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)

Leading organisation in the field of applied mathematics. Website provides free access to some teaching materials for educators.

Mathcentre [Basic]

Great free resource created by UK HE staff for post-16 students. Offers a wide range of self-study guides in a variety of formats, including audiovisual and resources for mobile phones.

Statstutor [Basic]

Developed by university tutors with contributions from the Royal Statistical Society's Centre for Statistical Education. Aims to provide post-16 students with free access to study materials, formulae leaflets, video tutorials, tests and quizzes.
