Summary

A 49-year-old male with type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presents for a laparoscopic hemicolectomy for colon polyps. The patient usually receives hemodialysis (HD) 3 days per week. What are the major concerns in the pre-, intra-, and post-operative periods? If surgery is scheduled on the day of dialysis, should the patient receive dialysis prior to the surgery? How will this affect your anesthetic management before, during, and after surgery?
