Summary

The following monologue is dreamlike... almost delirious. SFX: footsteps and pattering coming on and offmic. She must be busy going up and down.

CYNTHIA: What the hell! Who is free here? Nobody is free here…

Just a minute. I am going out. I have a date. When he comes we'll drive to Jabulani Amphitheatre. Then … what? Ok … What dress am I going to wear? This red one. Ja, I like this red one.

We'll go to Orlando Stadium to watch Pirates thrash Kaiser Chiefs. He'll root for Chiefs and I'll root for Pirates. Then we'll quarrel… No, please no quarrels tonight.

Where is my cosmetic case? I have got to put on my best make-up. And my jewellery box.

We'll quarrel and I'll leave in a huff. Take a taxi home. He'll come and apologize profusely. Then we'll start the evening afresh.

Let's see… Where shall we go next? I know where we shall go … We'll go to Kolokoti's Shebeen. Sit there and have a cold beer. Listen to jazz. The Bird. Coletrane. Kippie Moeketsi. Malombo. Dolphy…

That's a perfect make-up that I have. Now let me see what hairstyle I am going to make. OK I know what I am going to do.

[She hums the song of the piano. The original piano melody then accompanies her.]

We'll stand up and dance … We'll go round… and round… like mad! And then we'll just sit down and listen. And talk … And laugh. Oh, how we shall laugh! Then I'll get drunk and demand to be taken home …

He'll make delaying tactics because he'll be enjoying the company of the other guys there - die anner blahs. I'll sulk. Then he'll drive me home … Then we'll make love … for the whole night. Oh, how we shall love!

Where is the mirror. Wow! Do I look beautiful!

[She laughs deliriously for a long time]

[SFX: Cloth being ripped to pieces]

Rip the stupid dress. Tear it to pieces. Dishevel the hair.

You know you can't go out. Rub the make-up off your stupid face.
