The tasks of wardens shall be these: namely, to seek and administer the property, rights, dues and legacies of the churches; to report to the local ordinary adulterers, harlots, incestuous persons, [usurers], slanderers, diviners, heretics, simoniacs, perjurers and others of notoriously bad reputation who dwell or loiter in the parish, and those who brawl or fight in the churchyard, as well as those who are [habitually unwilling to attend divine prayers, the sacred service, or the divine mysteries, on Sundays and holy days, (being hindered by no lawful impediments); also to give others who make a noise in church during divine service and disturb the sacred mysteries with their talking and shouting two warnings, that they should be silent. But if they, or one of them, shall refuse to obey these warnings the wardens shall ensure that the matter is reported within a month to the local ordinary, either by themselves or by letters signed by the rector or the vicar. It is our will that such crimes, ﹛so if﹜ reported by the wardens and proved by lawful means, we desire to be punished without delay by penalties to be imposed at the judgment of the ordinaries.

Furthermore, it will be the wardens’ responsibility to report to the local ordinary any ruins of the chancel, dwellings, and houses which belong to the rector, vicar, prebendary or master of a college or hospital, as well as any defects arising from the dilapidations, and the omissions and errors of the curates or ministers. They shall also repair the nave of the parish church and the tower, and ensure that the bells, books and other ornaments of the church are provided, and that the verses of Holy Scripture which are meant to be inscribed on the walls actually are. They shall also enclose the churchyard with a decent fence. And if the monies of the church are not enough to cover the above, it shall be lawful for them, with the agreement of four of the more senior parishioners, to be chosen by them for this purpose, to impose a collection on individual parishioners rated according to their ability to pay (provided that they first commit themselves to pay a just portion).
