Summary
When the House divided on the attainder of Thomas Wentworth†, 1st earl of Strafford on 21 April 1641, the 59 who voted against the motion to bring in the attainder bill were given the sobriquet ‘Straffordians’ by commentators. The lists in the diary of Sir Simonds D’Ewes* (Harl. 165, f. 85) and ‘A Catalogue of the Votes’ (Harl. 1769, f. 83), are the most reliable, and there is considerable overlap. They are reproduced in Procs. LP iv. 42, 51 (see 50n for discussion of other variants).
