This piece explores possible reasons for Lucilius’ suggestive reference to worms, emblemate uermiculato, in the famous comment (about speech arranged akin to mosaics) which has survived from Book 2 of the satirist. The fragment can be set metatextually amid other extracts of Lucilius to show the poet's agency and skill, considered as having influenced aspects of its own afterlife (especially in Hor. Sat. 2.4) and appreciated in its historical context as a hit at Publius Mucius Scaevola, who died from phthiriasis.

The city of Jerash in northern Jordan was badly damaged by an earthquake in AD 749. As a result of this, many parts of the city, including the Northwest Quarter, were abandoned and further construction ceased. Archaeological excavations in those parts of the city therefore reveal snapshots in time from the moment at which disaster hit. Of particular interest is the so-called ‘House of the Tesserae’, where archaeologists discovered a trough for the storage of pieces to be used in the construction of mosaics. The find, reported here for the first time, provides a unique insight into the practice of mosaic-laying during the Early Islamic Period.

The original poem inscribed above an image of Europa and the bull on the Lullingstone villa mosaic has long been recognised as referring to an episode in Ovid's Metamorphoses and making an allusion to Virgil's Aeneid. Here it is proposed that it is also a parody of a poem by Martial on the same subject and adds to the growing quantity of classical literature with which the fourth-century Romano-British elite are known to have been familiar.

Winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) are hatched as bilaterally symmetric larvae which live near the ocean surface. At metamorphosis, they become laterally compressed, one eye migrates to the opposite side of the head, and they live the remainder of their lives lying on their blind side on the ocean floor. The present study characterizes and quantifies retinal cell distribution throughout the larval period and contrasts it with the adult retina. Based on light- and electron-microscopic analyses, retinas of larval flounder contain only a single cone-like photoreceptor type, arranged in a hexagonal array. In contrast, after metamorphosis, the adult retina has three types of photoreceptors: rods, single cones, and double cones. Rod photoreceptors are numerous in the ventral retina and decrease in density dorsad. The cone photoreceptor density, in contrast to rods, is higher in the dorsal retina decreasing ventrad. Adult cone photoreceptors are arranged in a square mosaic with four double cones surrounding one single cone. The differences in larval and adult retinal morphology reflect the distinctly different habitat each occupies.

The significance of the well-known central roundel of the mosaic from Hinton St Mary, Dorset, UK, which carries a young male head with a chi-rho monogram behind it and pomegranates on each side, has been much discussed. This paper marshals evidence which suggests that the head is not a representation of Christ, but of one of the emperors of the House of Constantine, perhaps Constantine himself. Some of the implications for the nature of fourth-century imperial culture are discussed.

Evidence of sexual dimorphism before fetal gonadal differentiation in mammals has been accumulating, suggesting that male embryos develop faster than female ones. The current investigation was performed to evaluate whether the development rate of precompacted human embryos is controlled by sex chromosomes. Sex was determined by polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridisation in 172 arrested embryos derived from in vitro fertilisation. The sex ratio (1.02:0.98) did not differ significantly from 1:1. Although more males appeared to have greater fragmentation, the difference between the sex ratios of highly fragmented and normal embryos (1.08:0.92) was not significant. Arrested female embryos had a tendency to exhibit more than five nuclei and less than 10% fragmentation, but the trend was not statistically significant. The current results suggest that the first developmental block in human embryos occurs prior to and shortly after genomic activation and is not determined by the presence of the Y chromosome.

Aim: In this article the authors illustrate using a case study approach how primary care professionals can use the combination of geodemographic data with hospital episode statistics (HES) to predict the location of people ‘at risk’ of diabetes mellitus (Type 2 diabetes) in the population of England. This approach facilitates social marketing of those ‘at risk’. Method: Geodemographic segmentation data for all households was combined with HES for 2001–2002, to predict population groups ‘at risk’ of Type 2 diabetes. Using a case study approach and quantitative data analysis techniques, a profile of the undiagnosed and ‘at risk’ population of Slough Primary Care Trust was created at town, ward and street levels. Recent literature on social marketing was applied to predicate a discussion of the theory and practice of social marketing that was most likely to succeed in dealing with the prevention of Type 2 diabetes, via the reduction of obesity and overweight in the population. Discussion: The increase in lifestyle-related diseases, such as, Type 2 diabetes that are linked with the rise in overweight and obesity and create large disease management costs for the National Health Service (NHS) are of great concern to primary healthcare professionals and governments throughout the westernized world. Until recently, public and government responses have been very reactive in respect of population groups most in need of lifestyle change. Approaches to the identification of ‘sub-populations’ most at risk of Type 2 diabetes and targeting of these is of direct relevance to the preventive work of primary care professionals. Conclusion: Geodemographic data overlaid onto official NHS and other routinely collected data, can aid the identification and targeting of groups most vulnerable to overweight and obesity, through social marketing approaches including direct mail, telephone canvassing and door-to-door communication channels.

This paper describes the development of a system that is capable of tiling mosaics using a robot according to requirements of the individual customer. The art of mosaic, in one form or another, has been practiced manually for thousands of years. Modern developments in materials and production techniques could be found as evidence that mosaic is very much alive in the new millennium. It is very costly and also difficult to find skilful people to tile mosaic. Therefore a computer-assisted robotic system has been constructed and applied. To activate the system a particular algorithm has been developed and successfully applied on an available SCARA robot.

This study presents a morphological and quantitative analysis of displaced ganglion cells performed in the chick retina at different stages of development (E11, E17, & P2). The lipophilic dye DiI inserted into the optic nerve provided a complete staining of displaced ganglion cell population and of their dendritic trees. From 11 days of incubation (E11) all neurons present a uniform morphology and are unmistakably recognizable by the dimensions of their cell body and by the presence of the axon. Their dendritic arborizations shape a complex network through the retina. Cell bodies are randomly distributed but dendritic trees of neighboring cells constantly present two levels of dendritic overlap: about 50% of the cells present a high degree of overlap, more than the 30% up to 95% of their total area, while the other half overlaps less than 20%. The high degree of overlap identifies a cluster, which is regularly formed by three and more rarely by four neurons starting from 17 days of incubation (E17) onward and after birth. From E17 onward, 94% of clusters is constantly formed by three cells and 6% of the clusters by four neurons. The distribution and the spatial arrangement of clusters are very regular, forming a mosaic that gives rise to a precise retinal coverage. The nearest-neighbor analysis unequivocally demonstrated that the mosaic of clusters is the most regular array so far described. This exact arrangement starts from 11 days of incubation and is maintained and refined through the following stages of development and after birth.

Consider a forest of maple trees in autumn, with leaves falling on the ground. Those coming late cover the others below, so eventually the fallen leaves form a statistically homogeneous spatial pattern. In particular, the uncovered leaf boundaries form a mosaic. We formulate a mathematical model to describe this mosaic, firstly in the case where the leaves are polygonal and later for leaves with curved boundaries. Mean values of certain statistics of the mosaic are derived.
