For $\theta $ a small generic universal stability condition of degree $0$ and A a vector of integers adding up to $-k(2g-2+n)$, the spaces $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,A}^\theta $ constructed in [AP21, HMP+22] are observed to lie inside the space $\textbf {Div}$ of [MW20], and their pullback under $\textbf {Rub} \to \textbf {Div}$ of loc. cit. to be smooth. This provides smooth and modular modifications $\widetilde {\mathcal {M}}_{g,A}^\theta $ of $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}$ on which the logarithmic double ramification cycle can be calculated by several methods.

We prove the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles on a principally polarized complex abelian variety whose minimal class is algebraic. In particular, the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers satisfies the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles. The main ingredient is a lift of the Fourier transform to integral Chow groups. Similarly, we prove the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve over the separable closure of a finitely generated field. Furthermore, abelian varieties satisfying such a conjecture are dense in their moduli space.

We investigate a novel geometric Iwasawa theory for ${\mathbf Z}_p$ -extensions of function fields over a perfect field k of characteristic $p>0$ by replacing the usual study of p-torsion in class groups with the study of p-torsion class group schemes. That is, if $\cdots \to X_2 \to X_1 \to X_0$ is the tower of curves over k associated with a ${\mathbf Z}_p$ -extension of function fields totally ramified over a finite nonempty set of places, we investigate the growth of the p-torsion group scheme in the Jacobian of $X_n$ as $n\rightarrow \infty $ . By Dieudonné theory, this amounts to studying the first de Rham cohomology groups of $X_n$ equipped with natural actions of Frobenius and of the Cartier operator V. We formulate and test a number of conjectures which predict striking regularity in the $k[V]$ -module structure of the space $M_n:=H^0(X_n, \Omega ^1_{X_n/k})$ of global regular differential forms as $n\rightarrow \infty .$ For example, for each tower in a basic class of ${\mathbf Z}_p$ -towers, we conjecture that the dimension of the kernel of $V^r$ on $M_n$ is given by $a_r p^{2n} + \lambda _r n + c_r(n)$ for all n sufficiently large, where $a_r, \lambda _r$ are rational constants and $c_r : {\mathbf Z}/m_r {\mathbf Z} \to {\mathbf Q}$ is a periodic function, depending on r and the tower. To provide evidence for these conjectures, we collect extensive experimental data based on new and more efficient algorithms for working with differentials on ${\mathbf Z}_p$ -towers of curves, and we prove our conjectures in the case $p=2$ and $r=1$ .

We construct the logarithmic and tropical Picard groups of a family of logarithmic curves and realize the latter as the quotient of the former by the algebraic Jacobian. We show that the logarithmic Jacobian is a proper family of logarithmic abelian varieties over the moduli space of Deligne–Mumford stable curves, but does not possess an underlying algebraic stack. However, the logarithmic Picard group does have logarithmic modifications that are representable by logarithmic schemes, all of which are obtained by pullback from subdivisions of the tropical Picard group.

We study the p-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell $ covers of the projective line in characteristic p for distinct primes p and $\ell $ . The main result is about the intersection of the p-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell =3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic p, for every genus g, signature type $(r,s)$ , and p-rank f satisfying the clear necessary conditions.

We prove an analogue of Kirchhoff’s matrix tree theorem for computing the volume of the tropical Prym variety for double covers of metric graphs. We interpret the formula in terms of a semi-canonical decomposition of the tropical Prym variety, via a careful study of the tropical Abel–Prym map. In particular, we show that the map is harmonic, determine its degree at every cell of the decomposition and prove that its global degree is $2^{g-1}$ . Along the way, we use the Ihara zeta function to provide a new proof of the analogous result for finite graphs. As a counterpart, the appendix by Sebastian Casalaina-Martin shows that the degree of the algebraic Abel–Prym map is $2^{g-1}$ as well.

We prove that a formula for the ‘pluricanonical’ double ramification cycle proposed by Janda, Pandharipande, Pixton, Zvonkine, and the second-named author is in fact the class of a cycle constructed geometrically by the first-named author. Our proof proceeds by a detailed explicit analysis of the deformation theory of the double ramification cycle, both to first and to higher order.

We give the first examples of derived equivalences between varieties defined over non-closed fields where one has a rational point and the other does not. We begin with torsors over Jacobians of curves over $\mathbb {Q}$ and $\mathbb {F}_q(t)$, and conclude with a pair of hyperkähler 4-folds over $\mathbb {Q}$. The latter is independently interesting as a new example of a transcendental Brauer–Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. The source code for the various computations is supplied as supplementary material with the online version of this article.

We study the cohomology of Jacobians and Hilbert schemes of points on reduced and locally planar curves, which are however allowed to be singular and reducible. We show that the cohomologies of all Hilbert schemes of all subcurves are encoded in the cohomologies of the fine compactified Jacobians of connected subcurves, via the perverse Leray filtration. We also prove, along the way, a result of independent interest, giving sufficient conditions for smoothness of the total space of the relative compactified Jacobian of a family of locally planar curves.

Over the moduli space of smooth curves, the double ramification cycle can be defined by pulling back the unit section of the universal jacobian along the Abel–Jacobi map. This breaks down over the boundary since the Abel–Jacobi map fails to extend. We construct a ‘universal’ resolution of the Abel–Jacobi map, and thereby extend the double ramification cycle to the whole of the moduli of stable curves. In the non-twisted case, we show that our extension coincides with the cycle constructed by Li, Graber, Vakil via a virtual fundamental class on a space of rubber maps.

We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based, not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibers and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fiber is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. It is proved that the image under the period map of a divisor in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_{g}$. It follows that a Hodge locus in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ has codimension at least 2.

We show that a genus $2$ curve over a number field whose jacobian has complex multiplication will usually have stable bad reduction at some prime. We prove this by computing the Faltings height of the jacobian in two different ways. First, we use a known case of the Colmez conjecture, due to Colmez and Obus, that is valid when the CM field is an abelian extension of the rationals. It links the height and the logarithmic derivatives of an $L$ -function. The second formula involves a decomposition of the height into local terms based on a hyperelliptic model. We use the reduction theory of genus $2$ curves as developed by Igusa, Liu, Saito, and Ueno to relate the contribution at the finite places with the stable bad reduction of the curve. The subconvexity bounds by Michel and Venkatesh together with an equidistribution result of Zhang are used to bound the infinite places.

We prove a version of Clifford’s theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree 2 and rank 1. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens’ theorem for metric graphs.

We give upper and lower bounds for the number of rational points on Prym varieties over finite fields. Moreover, we determine the exact maximum and minimum number of rational points on Prym varieties of dimension 2.

We show that there is no stable Siegel modular form that vanishes on every moduli space of curves.

We show that a standard conic bundle over a minimal rational surface is rational and its Jacobian splits as the direct sum of Jacobians of curves if and only if its derived category admits a semiorthogonal decomposition by exceptional objects and the derived categories of those curves. Moreover, such a decomposition gives the splitting of the intermediate Jacobian also when the surface is not minimal.

In this paper we study genus 2 curves whose Jacobians admit a polarized (4, 4)-isogeny to a product of elliptic curves. We consider base fields of characteristic different from 2 and 3, which we do not assume to be algebraically closed. We obtain a full classification of all principally polarized abelian surfaces that can arise from gluing two elliptic curves along their 4-torsion, and we derive the relation their absolute invariants satisfy.

As an intermediate step, we give a general description of Richelot isogenies between Jacobians of genus 2 curves, where previously only Richelot isogenies with kernels that are pointwise defined over the base field were considered.

Our main tool is a Galois theoretic characterization of genus 2 curves admitting multiple Richelot isogenies.

If C is a curve of genus 2 defined over a field k and J is its Jacobian, then we can associate a hypersurface K in ℙ3 to J, called the Kummer surface of J. Flynn has made this construction explicit in the case when the characteristic of k is not 2 and C is given by a simplified equation. He has also given explicit versions of several maps defined on the Kummer surface and shown how to perform arithmetic on J using these maps. In this paper we generalize these results to the case of arbitrary characteristic.

By using the Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix by Zagier, it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.
