Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the ability of the extenders dietholate and SC-0058 to prevent enhanced biodegradation of EPTC and butylate applied to Wisconsin soils with different histories of carbamothioate herbicide use. Enhanced EPTC and butylate biodegradation occurred in soils previously treated with those herbicides. Enhanced biodegradation of dietholate occurred on soils previously treated with that extender plus either EPTC or butylate. Enhanced dietholate biodegradation was observed when applied alone or in combination with butylate or EPTC. Application with dietholate prevented enhanced biodegradation of butylate but not EPTC even though enhanced biodegradation of dietholate was occurring. Enhanced biodegradation of SC-0058 did not occur. SC-0058 prevented enhanced EPTC and butylate biodegradation even in soils previously treated for three consecutive years with the respective herbicide plus SC-0058. Application of either 1.1 or 2.2 kg/ha SC-0058 plus 6.7 kg/ha EPTC provided equal or better wild proso millet control and sweet corn yields than applications of EPTC alone or EPTC plus dietholate.

Critical period experiments were conducted in 1997 near Milton, WI, and in 1998 near Edgerton, WI, in which Eriochloa villosa (Thunb.) Kunth emergence was characterized and related to Zea mays L. yield loss and weed seed production. At Milton, 2.7% of the spring seedbank emerged, and at Edgerton, 14.5% of the spring seedbank emerged. Peak time of E. villosa emergence occurred early in the season at both locations, accounting for 84% of the total season emergence at Milton by 37 d after planting and 90% of the total season emergence at Edgerton by 27 d after planting. A secondary peak in emergence occurred at each site, accounting for 14% of the total season emergence at Milton between 38 and 52 d after planting and 8% of the total season emergence at Edgerton between 28 and 43 d after planting. Following the secondary peak in emergence at each site, approximately 2% of the total season emergence occurred. Zea mays grain yield was reduced when E. villosa interfered with Z. mays past the V11 stage at Milton and the V3 stage at Edgerton. Zea mays yield reductions at Edgerton were greater, occurred under shorter periods of weed interference, and were associated with greater E. villosa biomass than yield reductions at Milton. Eriochloa villosa that emerged after the V2 Z. mays stage at Milton and the V3 stage at Edgerton did not cause crop yield loss; however, these plants produced seed at 143 and 63% of the initial spring seedbanks, respectively.

Efficacy of primisulfuron and reduced rates of nicosulfuron on woolly cupgrass, wild-proso millet, and giant foxtail in field corn was evaluated in 1994 and 1995. Nicosulfuron was applied at 18, 27, and 36 g ai/ha alone and with 20 g ai/ha primisulfuron. Woolly cupgrass control from nicosulfuron at 18 and 27 g/ha was less than control from 36 g/ha (79% and 84% vs. 90%, respectively). Woolly cupgrass control was 5% greater when primisulfuron was combined with nicosulfuron at 27 and 36 g/ha than when nicosulfuron was applied alone. Corn grain yields were similar among all nicosulfuron plus primisulfuron treatments applied to control woolly cupgrass in 1994. In 1995, corn grain yield was increased 900 kg/ha when primisulfuron was combined with nicosulfuron at 18 g/ha compared to nicosulfuron applied at the same rate alone. Wild-proso millet control 3 WAT with nicosulfuron at 18 g/ha was less than control with nicosulfuron at 36 g/ha. Wild-proso millet control 8 WAT with nicosulfuron alone was greater than when nicosulfuron at any rate was applied with primisulfuron. No differences in corn grain yields were observed across nicosulfuron rates or combinations with primisulfuron to control wild-proso millet either year. Giant foxtail control and corn grain yield were not affected by nicosulfuron rate or combined applications of nicosulfuron and primisulfuron either year.

Field studies were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to explore interactions among DPX-V9360 herbicide applied postemergence, terbufos insecticide applied as an in-furrow treatment, and the environment. Field corn (‘Pioneer 3751’) and sweet corn (‘Jubilee’) were planted with and without an in-furrow application of terbufos. DPX-V9360 was applied postemergence when the corn was in the 4- to 6-leaf stage at 0, 35, 70, 140, and 280 g ai ha-1 with nonionic surfactant and 28% N fertilizer solution. Crop response to DPX-V9360 was similar at all three locations, varying only in magnitude of injury. Crop injury was greater with Jubilee sweet corn than with Pioneer 3751 field corn. Injury to both hybrids increased as DPX-V9360 application rate increased. Application of terbufos increased injury from DPX-V9360 to both hybrids. Significant yield reduction did not occur with either hybrid when DPX-V9360 was applied at rates of 140 g ha-1 or less and no terbufos was applied.

Field studies were conducted in 1985 and 1986 to determine the influence of herbicide rate, carrier, and carrier volume on off-site movement of clomazone {2-[2-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxalidinone} using sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. ‘HY-894’) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Caldwell’) as indicator plants. Clomazone applied at the lowest rate (0.56 kg ai/ha) had less off-site movement than higher rates. Off-site movement was similar among water carrier volumes applied at each clomazone rate but was less when clomazone was impregnated onto dry fertilizer.

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and in 1998 to determine the effects of density and time of emergence on Eriochloa villosa growth and seed production in Zea mays. E. villosa was transplanted at four densities (3, 9, 27, and 81 plants m−2) to simulate emergence at four Z. mays growth stages (VE, V2, V5, and V10). Compared to E. villosa plants that emerged with Z. mays plants, total above-ground E. villosa biomass at maturity of plants grown at 3 plants m−2 was reduced by 54, 97, and 99% when emergence was delayed until the V2, V5, and V10 stages of Z. mays, respectively, in 1997. In 1998, total aboveground E. villosa biomass at maturity was reduced by 70, 87, and 99% when emergence was delayed until the V2, V5, and V10 stages of Z. mays, respectively. E. villosa aboveground vegetative biomass per plant at maturity was linearly related to seed production per plant in each year. E. villosa seed production m−2 decreased nonlinearly as density decreased and time of emergence was delayed. Based on estimated model parameters, maximum seed production was 57,100 and 12,700 seeds m−2 in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Within time of emergence, E. villosa density did not affect seed mass per seed, however, seed mass of late-emerging cohorts was less than that of early-emerging cohorts. Time of weed emergence relative to the crop was a very important factor in determining biomass and seed production. Results suggest that late-emerging plants may not be very important to long-term management of E. villosa.

Field experiments were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in 1990 to explore interactions between nicosulfuron applied POST and terbufos insecticide at 0.06 or 0.11 g ai/m of row applied in-furrow on ‘Pioneer 3751’ field corn and ‘Jubilee’ sweet corn. Nicosulfuron at 0, 70, and 140 g ai/ha plus nonionic surfactant and 28% nitrogen fertilizer was applied to both corn types. Field corn response to nicosulfuron and terbufos was similar at all locations, whereas sweet corn injury varied with location. Nicosulfuron injured field corn more when applied at the four-leaf than the three-leaf stage. Injury to both corn types increased as nicosulfuron rate increased or when applied following terbufos. Nicosulfuron at 140 g/ha without terbufos did not reduce yield of either corn type; however, corn previously treated in-furrow with terbufos reduced yield.

Field studies were conducted near Beechwood, WI in 1986 and Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1987 and 1988 to evaluate herbicide treatments for control of triazine-resistant common lambsquarters (TR-CHEAL) in corn. AH PRE and many early postemergence (EP) and POST treatments were less effective in 1988 than in 1986 or 1987 due to drought. Atrazine, cyanazine, and metolachlor PRE controlled less than 15% TR-CHEAL late-season over the three years. Dicamba or pendimethalin applied PRE controlled 88 to 99% late-season TR-CHEAL in 1986 and 1987. Late-season TR-CHEAL control in 1986 and 1987 from acetochlor plus atrazine, alachlor plus atrazine, and metolachlor plus linuron applied PRE ranged from 58 to 86%. Pendimethalin plus cyanazine or atrazine applied EP controlled TR-CHEAL 97% or more late-season in 1986 and 1987, while pendimethalin plus dicamba plus atrazine applied EP controlled TR-CHEAL 97% or more each year. Late-season TR-CHEAL control from tridiphane plus cyanazine or atrazine EP was less than 58%. Late-season TR-CHEAL control from dicamba, 2,4-D amine, pyridate, and thifensulfuron applied POST was 87 to 99% each year, and was 94 to 99% in 1986 and 1987 from bromoxynil or bentazon applied POST. Dicamba, thifensulfuron, pendimethalin, pyridate, and 2,4-D amine were most effective in controlling TR-CHEAL in corn.

The chemical composition and the utilization by domestic goats (Capra hircus L. ‘Saanen’) of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hay and silage that contained or did not contain hoary alyssum [Berteroa incana (L.) DC. ♯ BEFIN] was studied. Alfalfa was higher in quality than hoary alyssum; crude protein (CP) was 38% higher, and the neutral- and acid-detergent fiber (NDF and ADF) were 18 and 29% lower, respectively. Less CP and more ADF were found in weedy hay than in other forages. Animal utilization, as measured by the dry-matter intake, digestible dry-matter intake, relative intake, and nutritive value index were greater for weed-free than for weedy forages. Hoary alyssum was more deleterious in chopped silage than in long hay, because of selective refusal of the weed by goats that were fed hay. The presence of hoary alyssum in alfalfa decreased its utilization by ruminants.

Field studies were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to determine the contribution of PRE applications of alachlor, metolachlor, acetochlor, SAN 582H, or pendimethalin on woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control when followed by POST nicosulfuron at 0, 0.018, 0.027, or 0.036 kg ai/ha. Sequential treatments controlled woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet greater than single applications of PRE herbicides, which when applied alone resulted in the least wild-proso millet control and lowest corn grain yield. Lack of complete woolly cupgrass control with POST nicosulfuron alone resulted in corn grain yield that was less than with sequential treatments but was equal to PRE treatments. Wild-proso millet control with nicosulfuron at 0.027 kg/ha resulted in corn grain yield that was less than with sequential treatments, but greater than with all PRE treatments except for SAN 582H. All PRE herbicides, regardless of early season performance, when followed by nicosulfuron resulted in woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control that was similar. Woolly cupgrass seed production compared to the nontreated check was reduced 98% with acetochlor followed by nicosulfuron. Sequential treatments provided the most consistent woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control, the highest corn grain yield, and the greatest reduction in woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet seed production.

Sweet corn tolerance to nicosulfuron as affected by interactions between nicosulfuron applied postemergence (POST), sweet corn hybrid, and rootworm insecticide applied at planting was determined in 1992 and 1993 field experiments. Sweet corn vigor was reduced as nicosulfuron rate increased from 35 to 140 g ai/ha. Sweet corn vigor was reduced 4% more by nicosulfuron with oil emulsifier mixture than nicosulfuron with non-ionic surfactant one week after treatment (WAT). Adjuvant selection did not influence nicosulfuron injury to sweet corn 2 WAT. Nicosulfuron applied postemergence directed (PDIR) caused less sweet corn injury than nicosulfuron applied broadcast POST. ‘Jubilee’ sweet corn was more sensitive to nicosulfuron and insecticide treatments than ‘Excellency’ or ‘Green Giant 40.’ Nicosulfuron reduced sweet corn vigor twice as much when terbufos was applied at planting compared to no insecticide at planting. Neither chlorpyrifos or chlorethoxyfos at planting increased sweet corn injury due to nicosulfuron compared to no insecticide. Excellency and Green Giant 40 yields were not reduced by any treatment. Yields were reduced only when nicosulfuron was applied to Jubilee treated with terbufos. Jubilee yield reduction from nicosulfuron and terbufos was prevented by applying nicosulfuron PDIR.

Field experiments were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to evaluate injurious interactions between nicosulfuron herbicide applied POST and nine insecticides applied at planting on ‘Pioneer 3751’ field corn in 1991. Insecticides were applied in-furrow, T-band, and surface band at planting. Corn injury from nicosulfuron and terbufos applications was more severe in Wisconsin than in Michigan. No corn injury was observed in Minnesota. Terbufos 15% ai granule (15G) or 20% ai controlled release granule (20CR) increased nicosulfuron injury to corn in Wisconsin. Nicosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha caused the greatest vigor reduction following terbufos 15G, intermediate vigor reduction following terbufos 20CR, phorate 20G, or phorate 20CR, and the least vigor reduction following fonofos, chlorpyrifos, chlorethoxyfos, tefluthrin, or carbofuran in Wisconsin.

A small -plot, pneumatic applicator was developed to apply either granular herbicide formulations or liquid herbicides impregnated on commercial dry fertilizer to field research plots. Pre-weighed herbicide samples poured into a stainless steel, motor-driven belt, cone seeder are automatically sput into four subsamples in a four-outlet rota seed distributor run by a 12-volt electric motor, and delivered to four plastic venturi chambers. A gasoline engine-powered leaf blower forces air through a 10-cm diam polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipe to the input sides of the venturi chambers. The forced air stream carries the herbicide samples through 2.5-cm diam flexible plastic tubing to four deflector shields mounted 61 cm apart on a fiberglass boom. The applicator uniformly delivers granules up to 400 kg/ha in a 2.5-m wide swath.

Eleven sweet corn hybrids representing a wide range of injury with imazethapyr in a greenhouse study were evaluated in simulated imazethapyr carryover field studies conducted at Arlington, WI. Imazethapyr at 0, 11, 22, and 44 g ai/ha was applied and incorporated 15 d prior to planting sweet corn. The greatest injury occurred 28 d after planting, with reductions in height ranging from 0 to 25%. Reductions in corn ear yields were similar all years for 10 of the 11 hybrids. Reductions in corn ear yield for ‘Crisp N’ Sweet 710,’ ‘Cornucopia,’ ‘Super Sweet Jubilee,’ ‘Excellency,’ and ‘DMC 20–35′ were less than for ‘Natural Sweet 9000,’ ‘Jubilee,’ ‘Zenith,’ ‘Green Giant 40,’ and ‘Green Giant 97.’ In 1992, plots were prepared for an actual imazethapyr carryover study by applying imazethapyr PPI at 70 and 140 g/ha and planting soybean. In 1993, four sweet corn hybrids were planted. Corn ear yield of Green Giant 97 was reduced following previous-year applications of 140 g/ha imazethapyr. Corn ear yields of Excellency, Super Sweet Jubilee, and Jubilee were not reduced at either actual carryover rate. These studies indicate variability among sweet corn hybrids in susceptibility to imazethapyr. Greenhouse results were indicative of field responses and may be useful as a rapid test to determine hybrid susceptibility.

Field studies in 1978 and 1979 evaluated the effectiveness of single and combination herbicide treatments in processing peas (Pisum sativum L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for the control of wild proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.). Eight treatments that included dinitroaniline herbicides controlled wild proso millet adequately through the entire growing season of the early-planted peas (approximately 60 days). Wild proso millet emergence and growth in untreated peas was suppressed by the early emergence, rapid growth, and high plant density of the drill-planted crop. Trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) at 0.8 kg/ha stunted pea growth and was the only treatment that reduced yields significantly. No herbicide treatment evaluated in soybeans controlled wild proso millet adequately for the entire growing season without reducing soybean growth and yield. Treatments containing dinitroaniline herbicides, which controlled wild proso millet in peas and resulted in good yield, did not perform similarly in soybeans.

Field studies were conducted at Arlington, WI, in 1996 and 1997 and at Georgetown, DE, and LeSueur, MN, in 1997 to determine weed control efficacy, crop injury, and yield response of PAT-transformed sweet corn to glufosinate-based weed management. Sequential applications of glufosinate 10 to 18 d apart at 0.4 and 0.3 kg ai/ha controlled common lambsquarters, common ragweed, velvetleaf, wild-proso millet, and fall panicum 90% or better at all locations. Weed control varied little among 0.3, 0.4, or 0.3 and 0.3 (sequential) kg/ha glufosinate rates. Glufosinate applied alone, with, or following atrazine controlled velvetleaf 90% or greater but was less consistent on common ragweed and common lambsquarters (73 to 100%). Atrazine plus metolachlor applied preemergence (PRE) and glufosinate applied alone postemergence (POST) provided inconsistent wild-proso millet and fall panicum control (43 to 99%). Metolachlor followed by glufosinate improved consistency of grass control (> 76%). Glufosinate followed by cultivation provided 80% or greater control of velvetleaf and wild-proso millet. Glufosinate did not injure or delay maturity of PAT-transformed sweet corn. Sweet corn treated with glufosinate resulted in yields greater than or equal to the sweet corn that was hand-weeded or received a standard herbicide treatment.

Herbicide dissipation was monitored in soils differing in herbicide use histories. Repeated annual applications over 5 yr enhanced biodegradation of butylate [S-ethyl bis(2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate] and EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylcarbamothioate) but not alachlor {2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide}, atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N′-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine], cyanazine {2-[[(4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]amino]-2-methylpropanenitrile}, or metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide]. Prior application of butylate or EPTC enhanced biodegradation of the other thiocarbamate herbicide but not alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, or metolachlor. Prior application of alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, metolachlor, or trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] did not enhance biodegradation of butylate or EPTC. Dissipation of EPTC applied with dietholate (O,O-diethyl-O-phenolphosphorothioate) was not enhanced by prior application of alachlor, atrazine, or trifluralin. Prior use of EPTC, EPTC + dietholate, butylate, or cycloate, respectively, enhanced biodegradation of EPTC in 100, 100, 71, and 50% of the experiments, of EPTC applied with dietholate in 57, 100, 60, and 33% of the experiments, of butylate in 33, 40, 100, and 20% of the experiments, and of cycloate in 0, 0, 17, and 0% of the experiments. Prior thiocarbamate herbicide applications usually did not enhance cycloate biodegradation, but soils from two locations without prior pesticide use histories rapidly degraded the herbicide. Storage of soil samples at 25 C for 6 or 12 months before application of EPTC and EPTC + dietholate resulted in less herbicide degradation than storage at 15 C. Differences in prior environmental conditions such as temperature may explain why development of enhanced biodegradation varied between years even in the same field plots.

Herbicide efficacy trials in field corn, sweet corn, and soybean were conducted at three locations in Wisconsin over a 6-yr period. Percent weed pressure (WP) was determined by visually estimating the contribution of all weed species present to the total crop and weed volume in each plot. Crop yields in each plot were measured. Percent crop yield reduction (YLDRED) was calculated by comparing mean yields of individual treatments with those of the highest yielding treatment in each trial. Linear regression analyses of YLDRED and WP data from 1640 field corn and 138 sweet corn treatments were significant. Nonlinear regression analysis of YLDRED and WP data from all 1374 soybean treatments was significant; however, a linear regression of those 1154 soybean treatments with WP ratings of 30 or less produced a more easily interpreted regression equation.

Field studies evaluated the effects of crop, crop rotation, planting date, row spacing, no-till planting, and herbicides on wild-proso millet control. Benefin and EPTC reduced wild-proso millet biomass in new seedings of alfalfa, and the combination of herbicides and forage harvest prevented wild-proso millet seed production in that crop. Wild-proso millet seedling populations were reduced and corn yields increased when corn followed 1 to 4 yr of alfalfa. Apparent effectiveness of herbicides in corn increased after cropping with alfalfa. Germination of buried wild-proso millet seed decreased approximately 90% after 54 months which is equivalent to 4-yr prior cropping to alfalfa. Wild-proso millet control and field and sweet corn yields increased when the crops were planted late season (May 17) rather than early season (April 27). Planting sweet corn in rows spaced 76 cm rather than 108 cm apart also increased sweet corn yields. EPTC plus dichlormid (EPTC+) plus cyanazine always controlled wild-proso millet equal to or better than EPTC+ alone. When field corn was planted no-till into killed alfalfa sod, combinations of pendimethalin plus simazine and pendimethalin plus cyanazine provided the best wild-proso millet control and corn yields. But the following year when corn was no-till planted into corn stubble of the identical plots, wild-proso millet control from the same treatments tended to be lower and corn yields were reduced.

In 1985, 1986, and 1987, pendimethalin at 1.7 kg ai/ha plus 2.2 kg ai/ha cyanazine, 2.2 kg ai/ha atrazine, or 1.1 kg/ha atrazine plus 1.1 kg/ha cyanazine was applied delayed preemergence, early postemergence, and postemergence with and without cultivation to evaluate woolly cupgrass control and corn injury. Results varied from year to year. Dry conditions in 1985 resulted in poorer woolly cupgrass control while cold and wet environments in 1987 resulted in corn injury and reduced yields from postemergence treatments containing cyanazine. Good early-season suppression of woolly cupgrass deteriorated to less than 75% control by the late-season evaluation in all experiments. The best woolly cupgrass control and highest corn yields were usually achieved when herbicide applications were followed by row cultivation. Corn yield increases averaged 28, 17, and 11% in 1985, 1986, and 1987, respectively, when a herbicide treatment was followed by row cultivation. Pendimethalin/triazine treatments followed with a row cultivation adequately suppressed woolly cupgrass in field corn, but adverse environmental conditions often reduced herbicide effectiveness or increased corn injury.
