  • Assessing cross-national invariance of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE)

  • Background

    The Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) is a 42-item self-report questionnaire that has been developed and validated to measure the dimensions of psychosis in the general population. The CAPE has a three-factor structure with dimensions of positive, negative and depression. Assessing the cross-national equivalence of a questionnaire is an essential prerequisite before pooling data from different countries. In this study, our aim was to investigate the measurement invariance of the CAPE across different countries.

    Methods

    Data were drawn from the European Union Gene-Environment Interaction (EU-GEI) study. Participants (incident cases of psychotic disorder, controls and siblings of cases) were recruited in Brazil, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and UK. To analyse the measurement invariance across these samples, we tested configural invariance (i.e. identical structures of the factors), metric invariance (i.e. equivalence of the factor loadings) and scalar invariance (i.e. equivalence of the thresholds) of the three CAPE dimensions using multigroup categorical confirmatory factor analysis methods.

    Results

    The configural invariance model fits well, providing evidence for identical factorial structure across countries. In comparison with the configural model invariance, the fit indices were very similar in the metric and scalar invariance models, indicating that factor loadings and thresholds did not differ across the six countries.

    Conclusion

    We found that, across six countries, the CAPE showed equivalent factorial structure, factor loadings and thresholds. Thus, differences observed in scores between individuals from different countries should be considered as reflecting different levels of psychosis.

  • The Condition and Cleaning of Acrylic Emulsion Paintings

  • Cleaning acrylic emulsion paintings is challenging because of the material properties of the paint films, including their solubility. The goal of this work was to learn more about the effect of aqueous treatments on acrylic paints. Paint manufacturers were asked for their recommendations for cleaning these paintings and conservators were asked to comment on the damage observed in them and on the treatments applied. Responses showed that aqueous cleaning treatments are used, despite the associated risks, and that more technical information is needed about the effects of cleaning. The experimental section of this paper evaluated the changes in physical and mechanical properties of aged cobalt blue paint as a result of exposure to aqueous cleaning solutions. The results indicated that short immersions in these solutions caused a drop in most mechanical properties, but longer immersions did not; the drop after the short immersions was mostly due to the great increase in dimensional thickness of the paint films. Longer conservation treatment times are not being advocated.

  • The possibility of using air-coupled ultrasound to find delaminations between layers in paintings was investigated. Simulations of modern paintings were constructed with hardboard as the support layer, and a layer of gesso, an animal hide glue and chalk, as the upper layer. Delaminations were introduced between the two layers. Scanning the samples using air-coupled ultrasound clearly showed these flaws. A transmitting transducer, which was 25 mm in diameter and had a focal length of 51 mm, was placed 11 mm from the back surface of the sample and an identical receiving transducer was placed 51 mm from the front surface. The transducers were operated in a tone burst mode at a center frequency of 475 kHz. Signal enhancement techniques were used to improve the contrast of the data.
