This paper investigates the steady-state pattern evolution of symmetric Faraday waves excited in a brimful cylindrical container when driving parameters much exceed critical thresholds. In such liquid systems, parametric surface responses are typically considered as the resonant superposition of unstable standing waves. A modified free-surface synthetic Schlieren method is employed to obtain full three-dimensional spatial reconstructions of instantaneous surface patterns. Multi-azimuth structures and localized travelling waves during the small-elevation phases of the oscillation cycle give rise to modal decomposition in the form of $\nu$-basis modes. Two-step surface-fitting results provide insight into the spatiotemporal characteristics of dominant wave components and corresponding harmonics in the experimental observations. Arithmetic combination of modal indices and uniform frequency distributions reveal the nonlinear mechanisms behind pattern formation and the primary pathways of energy transfer. Taking the hypothetical surface manifestation of multiple azimuths as the modal solutions, a linear stability analysis of the inviscid system is utilised to calculate fundamental resonance tongues (FRTs) with non-overlapping bottoms, which correspond to subharmonic or harmonic $\nu$-basis modes induced by surface instability at the air–liquid interface. Close relationships between experimental observations and corresponding FRTs provide qualitative verification of dominant modes identified using surface-fitting results. This supports the validity and rationality of the applied $\nu$-basis modes.

Aspergillosis is a rising concern worldwide; however, its prevalence is not well documented in China. This retrospective study determined Aspergillus’s epidemiology and antifungal susceptibilities at Meizhou People’s Hospital, South China. From 2017 to 2022, the demographic, clinical, and laboratory data about aspergillosis were collected from the hospital’s records and analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and ANOVA. Of 474 aspergillosis cases, A. fumigatus (75.32%) was the most common, followed by A. niger (9.92%), A. flavus (8.86%), and A. terreus (5.91%). A 5.94-fold increase in aspergillosis occurred during the study duration, with the highest cases reported from the intensive care unit (52.74%) – chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (79.1%) and isolated from sputum (62.93%). Only 38 (8.02%) patients used immunosuppressant drugs, while gastroenteritis (5.7%), haematologic malignancy (4.22%), and cardiovascular disease (4.22%) were the most prevalent underlying illnesses. In A. fumigatus, the wild-type (WT) isolates against amphotericin B (99.1%) were higher than triazoles (97–98%), whereas, in non-fumigatus Aspergillus species, the triazole (95–100%) WT proportion was greater than amphotericin B (91–95%). Additionally, there were significantly fewer WT A. fumigatus isolates for itraconazole and posaconazole in outpatients than inpatients. These findings may aid in better understanding and management of aspergillosis in the region.

This study presents a novel 4-DOF two-limb gripper mechanism with a simple design that offers high adaptability for different objects. The mechanism integrates a three-finger end effector and employs a 2-DOF driving system in both serial kinematic chains mounted on the base, addressing performance problems caused by moving actuators. First, the architecture of the gripper mechanism is described, and its mobility is verified. Next, the inverse and forward kinematic problems are solved, and the Jacobian matrix is derived to analyze the singularity conditions. The inverse and forward singularity surfaces are plotted. The workspace is investigated using a search method, and two indices, manipulability and dexterity, are studied. The proposed manipulator’s parameters are optimized for improved dexterity. The novel gripper mechanism has high potential for grasping different types of parts within a large workspace, making it a valuable addition to the field of robotics.

Longitudinal studies on the variations of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of K. pneumoniae across two decades are rare. We aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence factors for K. pneumoniae isolated from patients with bacteraemia or urinary tract infection (UTI) from 1999 to 2022. A total of 699 and 1,267 K. pneumoniae isolates were isolated from bacteraemia and UTI patients, respectively, and their susceptibility to twenty antibiotics was determined; PCR was used to identify capsular serotypes and virulence-associated genes. K64 and K1 serotypes were most frequently observed in UTI and bacteraemia, respectively, with an increasing frequency of K20, K47, and K64 observed in recent years. entB and wabG predominated across all isolates and serotypes; the least frequent virulence gene was htrA. Most isolates were susceptible to carbapenems, amikacin, tigecycline, and colistin, with the exception of K20, K47, and K64 where resistance was widespread. The highest average number of virulence genes was observed in K1, followed by K2, K20, and K5 isolates, which suggest their contribution to the high virulence of K1. In conclusion, we found that the distribution of antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence gene profiles, and capsular types of K. pneumoniae over two decades were associated with their clinical source.

We explored the transmission mechanisms of corporate fraud and its punishments within social network communities. Using fraud triangle theory and trust triangle theory, we hypothesize four transmitting channels of how fraud commission and detection are affected by peers’ fraud and punishment. Based on Chinese listed corporations from 2008 to 2018, we first construct and detect interlocked social network communities with a community-detecting algorithm, and then examine hypotheses using a bivariate probit model with partial observability. Our findings indicate that peer-concealing and -hinting effects exist within social network communities. The peer-concealing effect decreases the likelihood of being detected when committing fraud, for those with more and closer fraudulent peers. The peer-hinting effect increases the likelihood of being detected when committing fraud, for those with more and closer punished peers. There is no evidence to support peer-contagion and vicarious-punishment effects. Thus, an improved understanding of the transmission mechanism of corporate fraud commission and detection within communities is provided to prevent and detect corporate fraud. In addition, stakeholders and regulators should be aware of the deviant subculture and social distancing in social network communities.

Trace elements may play an important role in obesity. This study aimed to assess the plasma and dietary intake levels of four trace elements, Mn, Cu, Zn and Se in a rural Chinese population, and analyse the relationship between trace elements and obesity. A cross-sectional study involving 2587 participants was conducted. Logistic regression models were used to analyse the association between trace elements and obesity; restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to assess the dose–response relationship between trace elements and obesity; the weighted quantile sum (WQS) model was used to examine the potential interaction of four plasma trace elements on obesity. Logistic regression analysis showed that plasma Se concentrations in the fourth quartile (Q4) exhibited a lower risk of developing obesity than the first quartile (Q1) (central obesity: OR = 0·634, P = 0·002; general obesity: OR = 0·525, P = 0·005). Plasma Zn concentration in the third quartile (Q3) showed a lower risk of developing obesity in general obesity compared with the first quartile (Q1) (OR = 0·625, P = 0·036). In general obesity, the risk of morbidity was 1·727 and 1·923 times higher for the second and third (Q2, Q3) quartiles of dietary Mn intake than for Q1, respectively. RCS indicated an inverse U-shaped correlation between plasma Se and obesity. WQS revealed the combined effects of four trace elements were negatively associated with central obesity. Plasma Zn and Se were negatively associated with obesity, and dietary Mn was positively associated with obesity. The combined action of the four plasma trace elements had a negative effect on obesity.

The relationship between erythrocyte membrane n-3 PUFA and breast cancer risk is controversial. We aimed to examine the associations of erythrocyte membrane n-3 PUFA with odds of breast cancer among Chinese women by using a relatively large sample size. A case–control study was conducted including 853 newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed breast cancer cases and 892 frequency-matched controls (5-year interval). Erythrocyte membrane n-3 PUFA were measured by GC. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were used to quantify the association between erythrocyte membrane n-3 PUFA and odds of breast cancer. Erythrocyte membrane α-linolenic acid (ALA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and total n-3 PUFA were inversely and non-linearly associated with odds of breast cancer. The OR values (95 % CI), comparing the highest with the lowest quartile (Q), were 0·57 (0·43, 0·76), 0·43 (0·32, 0·58) and 0·36 (0·27, 0·49) for ALA, DPA and total n-3 PUFA, respectively. Erythrocyte membrane EPA and DHA were linearly and inversely associated with odds of breast cancer ((EPA: ORQ4 v. Q1 (95 % CI) = 0·59 (0·45, 0·79); DHA: ORQ4 v. Q1 (95 % CI) = 0·50 (0·37, 0·67)). The inverse associations were observed between ALA and odds of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and between DHA and oestrogen receptor+ breast cancer. This study showed that erythrocyte membrane total and individual n-3 PUFA were inversely associated with odds of breast cancer. Other factors, such as menopause and hormone receptor status, may warrant further investigation when examining the association between n-3 PUFA and odds of breast cancer.

Childhood is a critical period for muscle accumulation. Studies in elders have reported that antioxidant vitamins could improve muscle health. However, limited studies have assessed such associations in children. This study included 243 boys and 183 girls. A seventy-nine-item FFQ was used to investigate dietary nutrients intake. Plasma levels of retinol and α-tocopherol were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with MS. Dual X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and total body fat. The ASM index (ASMI) and ASMI Z-score were then calculated. Hand grip strength was measured using a Jamar® Plus+ Hand Dynamometer. Fully adjusted multiple linear regression models showed that for each unit increase in plasma retinol content, ASM, ASMI, left HGS and ASMI Z-score increased by 2·43 × 10−3 kg, 1·33 × 10−3 kg/m2, 3·72 × 10−3 kg and 2·45 × 10−3 in girls, respectively (P < 0·001–0·050). ANCOVA revealed a dose–response relationship between tertiles of plasma retinol level and muscle indicators (Ptrend: 0·001–0·007). The percentage differences between the top and bottom tertiles were 8·38 %, 6·26 %, 13·2 %, 12·1 % and 116 % for ASM, ASMI, left HGS, right HGS and ASMI Z-score in girls, respectively (Pdiff: 0·005–0·020). No such associations were observed in boys. Plasma α-tocopherol levels were not correlated with muscle indicators in either sex. In conclusion, high circulating retinol levels are positively associated with muscle mass and strength in school-age girls.

Breast cancer is a high-risk disease with a high mortality rate among women. Chemotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of breast cancer. However, chemotherapy eventually results in tumours that are resistant to drugs. In recent years, many studies have revealed that the activation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling is crucial for the emergence and growth of breast tumours as well as the development of drug resistance. Additionally, drugs that target this pathway can reverse drug resistance in breast cancer therapy. Traditional Chinese medicine has the properties of multi-target and tenderness. Therefore, integrating traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine into chemotherapy provides a new strategy for reversing the drug resistance of breast tumours. This paper mainly reviews the possible mechanism of Wnt/β-catenin in promoting the process of breast tumour drug resistance, and the progress of alkaloids extracted from traditional Chinese medicine in the targeting of this pathway in order to reverse the drug resistance of breast cancer.

The myopic strategy is one of the most important strategies when studying bandit problems. In 2018, Nouiehed and Ross put forward a conjecture about Feldman’s bandit problem (J. Appl. Prob. (2018) 55, 318–324). They proposed that for Bernoulli two-armed bandit problems, the myopic strategy stochastically maximizes the number of wins. In this paper we consider the two-armed bandit problem with more general distributions and utility functions. We confirm this conjecture by proving a stronger result: if the agent playing the bandit has a general utility function, the myopic strategy is still optimal if and only if this utility function satisfies reasonable conditions.

We find that mortgage loans originated after the adoption of the inevitable disclosure doctrine (IDD; a mechanism discouraging loan officers’ labor mobility) have a lower default probability, a higher loan modification rate, and a lower foreclosure rate. These effects are unaccompanied by any reduction in loan supply and contribute to more stable housing prices. Using the adoption of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act as an alternative identification generates consistent results. Overall, our findings suggest that restricting loan officers’ labor mobility leads to better ex ante screening and ex post monitoring, improving the origination efficiency for U.S. residential mortgage loans.

Zonal jets and inertia–gravity waves are ubiquitous on planets such as Earth, Jupiter and Saturn. Motivated by the modification of energy flux of balanced flow by inertia–gravity waves, this paper studies the impact of near-inertial waves (NIWs) on zonal jets on a $\beta$-plane. Using a two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic and NIW coupled system on a $\beta$-plane (Xie & Vanneste, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 774, 2015, pp. 143–169), we find NIWs catalytically impact several features of zonal jets. The NIWs inhibit jet formation due to the waves’ catalytic induction of downscale mean energy flux. As the strength of NIWs increases, a critical point exists beyond which zonal jets are annihilated. The jet spacing is captured by the Rhines scale $L\sim \sqrt {U/\beta }$ with $U$ estimated from the upscale energy flux induced by the mean flow alone, which again shows that the NIWs’ impact is catalytic. Also, the temporal asymmetry of NIWs leads to the spatial asymmetry of jet dynamics. The jet profiles are asymmetric with a stronger shear on the left flank. And similar to the left turning of vortex dipole under the impact of NIWs, the NIW-modified jets migrate poleward. The NIWs also show a catalytic role in jet migration: the net momentum flux directly induced by NIWs is of secondary importance in the zonal mean momentum dynamics and impedes jet migration, while the advective effect of NIW-modified mean flow dominates the jet migration velocity.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Aim1: To develop a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to effectively identify statin associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) in patients’electronic health records (EHRs). Aim2: To develop a machine learning model based on clinical features within EHRs that predict the likelihood of SAMS occurrences. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: A retrospective cohort of adult patients initiated on statins within the Minnesota Fairview Healthcare System EHRs from 2010 to 2020 will be analyzed. NLP-PIER (Patient Information Extraction for Research) platform will be used to search and identify patients who developed SAMS after statin initiation. Manual annotation of clinical notes will be completed to validate the accuracy of identified SAMS cases. Then, a selection of clinical features within the EHRs will be input as predictors for machine learning algorithms development. Select machine learning classifiers will be deployed to generate models for the prediction of SAMS and the best-performing model will be selected based on model performance. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: The expected outcomes include generation of a fine-tuned NLP algorithm that can rigorously identify SAMS occurrences within EHRs. Further, we anticipate having a practical risk model that accurately predicts patients’risks of developing SAMS when taking statins. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The positive and translational impact of our research will be to equip healthcare providers with such informatics tools to improve statin adherence, ultimately promoting patient optimal health and outcomes by maximizing the tolerance and thus realizing the therapeutic benefits of statins.

The application scopes of two different reductive perturbation methods to derive the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation and coupled KdV (CKdV) equation in two-temperature-ion dusty plasma are given by using the particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical method in the present paper. It suggests that the reductive perturbation method (RPM) is valid if the amplitude of the CKdV solitary wave is small enough. However, for the KdV solitary wave, RPM is valid not only if the amplitude of the KdV solitary wave is small enough, but also if the nonlinear coefficient of the KdV equation is not tending to zero.
