Background: The lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) is uniquely found in primates and has been associated with contextual learning. This function is thought to be subserved by neurons that are tuned to abstract concepts and the combination of those concepts. LPFC neuron tuning remains to be fully investigated in naturalistic conditions. Methods: Two macaques were trained to perform a context-colour association task while using a joystick to navigate in an X-shaped maze. They were implanted with two 96-channel microelectrode arrays, targeting the LPFC. Mean firing rates were computed and multivariate linear regressions were used to determine tuning. Results: LPFC neurons were tuned to context (12.4%), color position (6.2%), target side (17.2%), and were selective to more than one feature (21.2%). LPFC neurons acquired tuning to task features in an ordered manner, starting with context (130.1±27.4ms), followed by the colour position (296.2±21.4ms) and then target side (493.3±19.3ms). Furthermore, most neurons (54%) changed their tuning over time. Conclusions: We demonstrate that single neurons can encode relevant features embedded in a naturalistic virtual environment. Our results support previous observations that LPFC neurons combine individual features and suggest that these features are also combined temporally. These findings contribute towards understanding the LPFC and have potential practical implications.

Background: Brain-machine-interface research has utilized multichannel single neuron recordings to decode movement intention. However, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) contains mental representations of more abstract task and goal elements which may be utilized as important signals in a brain-machine-interface. We therefore utilized virtual reality to simulate a real-world task while recording from ensembles of primate PFC neurons. Methods: Two male rhesus macaques (macaca mulatta) were trained to navigate a virtual reality environment using a joystick and learn a context-object association rule. We implanted each monkey with two 96-channel Utah arrays (Blackrock Microsystems) in the lateral PFC (areas 9/46 and 8a) and simultaneously recorded from multiple single neurons. Results: A linear support-vector-machine decoded task elements (context, target location and chosen direction of movement) with significantly greater than chance accuracy. This information was decoded in a sequential manner as the primates made a rule-based decision, with context information appearing first, followed by target location, and chosen side. Conclusions: We found that different neuronal ensembles encode the elements needed for implementing the context rule, and that such ensembles are activated sequentially. Brain-machine-interface systems may benefit by integrating neural data from the PFC, providing salient goal-related information such as the content of the goal and its spatial location.

The Consumer Information Working Party has published this paper which explores how we can better engage consumers with long-term savings and investments. The working party considered the current state of consumer information, which is a long way from ideal, including: consumer insights and touch points, the current consumer information model, relevant considerations from behavioural economics, examples of information failures and some successes from other fields. They then propose a way to deliver more effective information, including a possible framework and some ideas for its application. They finish with proposals for immediate next steps and urge the Actuarial Profession to take a lead in this area.

This article reviews the putative role of emotion dysregulation in diverse clinical presentations and considers some of its aetiological factors, such as insecure attachments in early life and traumatic experiences in later life. The neurobiology of emotional processes is described in relation to the ‘window of tolerance’ model of arousal levels optimal for information processing. Treatment options are considered and ways to regulate distress, derived from different approaches, are summarised in a ‘toolbox’. Fictitious case vignettes illustrate clinical applications.

The focus of this paper is the identification, and more importantly, sustainable management, of risks embedded in guarantees attaching to unit linked savings and retirement contracts (as commonly referred to as GMxBs). In developing customer centric guarantees that are not readily transferrable to the capital markets, insurance undertakings require the skills and resources to hedge the guarantees within their own balance sheet (or with a temporary use of packaged solutions such as reinsurance). In taking on the guarantee manufacture task insurers are departing from areas of historic competence and need to develop a comprehensive understanding of all elements of market risk replication. These include both first order market exposures as well as the material second order risks associated with market micro structure. The paper seeks to integrate this comprehensive analysis within a practitioner focused framework and concludes with a senior executive summary of “Seven key considerations in successful guarantee manufacture”.

Severe malaria has a high mortality rate (15–20%) despite treatment with effective antimalarial drugs. Adjunctive therapies for severe malaria that target the underlying disease process are therefore urgently required. Adhesion of erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium falciparum to human cells has a key role in the pathogenesis of life-threatening malaria and could be targeted with antiadhesion therapy. Parasite adhesion interactions include binding to endothelial cells (cytoadherence), rosetting with uninfected erythrocytes and platelet-mediated clumping of infected erythrocytes. Recent research has started to define the molecular mechanisms of parasite adhesion, and antiadhesion therapies are being explored. However, many fundamental questions regarding the role of parasite adhesion in severe malaria remain unanswered. There is strong evidence that rosetting contributes to severe malaria in sub-Saharan Africa; however, the identity of other parasite adhesion phenotypes that are implicated in disease pathogenesis remains unclear. In addition, the possibility of geographic variation in adhesion phenotypes causing severe malaria, linked to differences in malaria transmission levels and host immunity, has been neglected. Further research is needed to realise the untapped potential of antiadhesion adjunctive therapies, which could revolutionise the treatment of severe malaria and reduce the high mortality rate of the disease.

Maurice Milne's article restricts its discussion of press treatment of industrial disputes in this period to an analysis of coverage of three strikes in three Newcastle upon Tyne papers. He passes from this review to the following conclusion:

The facile assumption that radical political beliefs would predispose their holder to espouse the cause of organised labour will not stand up to close scrutiny, at least where one important industrial region and its newspapers are concerned.

Background. Discontinuation of benzodiazepine (BZ) treatment results in a well-characterized withdrawal syndrome in 40–50% of anxious patients. While numerous studies have established the role of BZ dose, treatment duration, half-life, potency, rate of withdrawal and severity of underlying anxiety disorder in predicting severity of withdrawal symptoms, fewer studies have examined the role of psychological and personality factors.

Method. In 123 panic disorder patients undergoing gradual tapered discontinuation of alprazolam in conjunction with pre-treatment with carbamazepine or placebo, the relationship between measures of ‘symptom sensitivity’ and ‘harm avoidance’, and severity of withdrawal symptoms measured as peak severity of symptoms, time before taper needed to be slowed due to symptoms, and ability to complete taper, was examined.

Results. After controlling for the less substantial effects of dose, treatment duration, pre-taper anxiety and panic attack frequency, measures of symptom sensitivity and harm avoidance accounted for an additional 3–6% of withdrawal variance.

Conclusions. These results show an effect of symptom sensitivity and harm avoidance on BZ withdrawal symptoms, comparable to prior findings linking dependent personality characteristics to withdrawal severity. Failure to show the expected effect on ability to complete taper may be due to either the more symptomatic nature of the patients in this study.

At weaning, piglets must adapt to considerable changes in their environmental, immunological, and nutritional status. This period of adaptation is accompanied by a reduction in piglet growth rate that has been associated with the shift from sow’s milk to a solid dry diet. Consequently, feeding management strategies that result in increased feed intake may increase piglet growth rate postweaning. This study evaluated the effects of providing feed as a gruel and feeding on floor mats on piglet performance for three weeks after weaning

When emptying finishing barns, it is common practice on U.S. operations to dispatch pigs over a two- to three-week period with the heaviest animals being selected first. However, there has been little research carried out under commercial conditions on the effect of removing pigs from a pen at slaughter weight on the performance of the remaining animals. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of removing the heaviest 30% of animals from a pen on the subsequent growth performance of the remaining pigs.

Wean-to-finish production, which involves taking pigs from weaning to slaughter in the same building, is becoming widely adopted in the US swine industry. This production system is being advocated largely because of claims of improved animal performance and a decrease in labor needed for animal movement compared to conventional multiple-stage systems. One of the potential disadvantages of this system is the considerable underutilization of floor space during the early growth period if pigs are penned in the group sizes that are appropriate for finishing pigs. However, increasing the stocking rate initially at weaning, with some of these pigs subsequently being moved to another finishing facility, may increase output from the system. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate effects of initial stocking rate and of feeder-trough space in commercial wean-to-finish facilities on pig performance from weaning to slaughter.

In this paper, we report on a substantial lowering of the threshold field for electron field emission from Si field emitter arrays (FEA), which have been coated with a thin layer of nanocrystalline diamond by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) from fullerene (C60) and methane (CH4) precursors. The field emission characteristics were investigated and the emission sites imaged using photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). Electron emission from these Si FEAs coated with nanocrystalline diamond was observed at threshold fields as low as 3 V/μm, with effective work functions as low as 0.59 eV.

Objective: To assess the outcome of treatment, a cross section of women from seven inpatient centres treating alcoholics were interviewed twice: as they entered treatment (n=114) and one year later (n=74) when they returned to the community.

Method: The patients were interviewed as they began treatment and 65% were traced for interviews one year later. Measures of self esteem, emotional health and drinking patterns are presented over time.

Results: Approximately one half of the women were abstinent when interviewed again and improved emotional health was related to abstinence. Of those who continued to drink many reduced their intake. A logistic regression analysis was applied to the data to explain the results. Among the major findings was the ability of therapists to predict subsequent drinking with a high degree of accuracy.

Conclusions: All of the services have abstinence as their goal. This could be challenged since at follow up only half of the women are abstinent. Controlled drinking may well be a valid objective if abstinence fails or could well be a valid objective for some patients.

In order to assess the safety and some efficacy aspects of clozapine under UK conditions, 54 in-patients with severe treatment-resistant schizophrenic disorders were evaluated using several scales before and during treatment. Of the 54 evaluated, 26 completed the 26-week study. Of these patients, 20 showed improvement in psychopathology, often to a marked degree, involving both positive and negative symptoms. Some oral-facial extrapyramidal side-effects decreased as well. Two patients developed neutropenia, but recovered on discontinuation of clozapine. The most frequent adverse event was hypersalivation, and five patients suffered from seizures. It is concluded that clozapine is worth considering for the treatment of severe treatment-resistant patients in the UK.
