The new generation of radio interferometers will deliver an unprecedented amount of deep and high resolution observations. In this proceedings, we present recent algorithmic advances in the context of the study of cosmic magnetism in order to extract all the information contained in these data.

By performing the multi-epoch monitoring observation with KaVA at 43 GHz, we investigate the kinematics of the notable newborn bright component C3 located at the tip of the recurrent jet of 3C 84. During 2015 August-September,we discover the positional flip of the C3 component about 0.4 milli-arcsecond in angular scale. The flux density of the C3 component coherently showed the monotonic increase after the flip during our monitoring period. These phenomena are in good agreement with characteristic behaviors of a jet propagation in clumpy ambient medium predicted in hydrodynamical simulations.

The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity for exploring the connection between γ-ray production and jet formation at an unprecedented linear resolution. However, the origin and location of the γ-rays in this source is still elusive. Based on previous radio/TeV correlation events, the unresolved jet base (radio core) and the peculiar knot HST-1 at >120 pc from the nucleus are proposed as candidate site(s) of γ-ray production. Here we report our intensive, high-resolution radio monitoring observations of the M87 jet with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) from February 2011 to October 2012. During this period, an elevated level of the M87 flux is reported at TeV with VERITAS. We detected a remarkable flux increase in the radio core with VERA at 22/43 GHz coincident with the VHE activity. Meanwhile, HST-1 remained quiescent in terms of its flux density and structure at radio. These results strongly suggest that the TeV γ-ray activity in 2012 originates in the jet base within 0.03 pc (projected) from the central supermassive black hole.

The advent of Fermi is changing our understanding on the radio and γ-ray emission in active galactic nuclei. Unlike pre-Fermi ideas, BL Lac objects are found to be the most abundant emitters in the γ-ray band. However, since they are relatively weak radio sources, most of their parsec-scale structure and their multifrequency properties are poorly understood and/or have not been investigated in a systematic fashion. Here we are analyzing the radio and γ-ray emission properties of a sample of 42 BL Lacs selected with no constraint on their radio and γ-ray emission. Thanks to new Very Long Baseline Array observations at 8 and 15 GHz for the whole sample, we discuss their parsec-scale structure. Parsec-scale radio emission is observed in the majority of the sources at both frequencies. The comparison between our results in radio and gamma-ray bands points out the presence of a large number of faint BL Lacs showing “non-classical” properties such as low source compactness, low core dominance, no gamma-ray emission.

In the lead-up to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, several next-generation radio telescopes and upgrades are already being built around the world. These include APERTIF (The Netherlands), ASKAP (Australia), e-MERLIN (UK), VLA (USA), e-EVN (based in Europe), LOFAR (The Netherlands), MeerKAT (South Africa), and the Murchison Widefield Array. Each of these new instruments has different strengths, and coordination of surveys between them can help maximise the science from each of them. A radio continuum survey is being planned on each of them with the primary science objective of understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies over cosmic time, and the cosmological parameters and large-scale structures which drive it. In pursuit of this objective, the different teams are developing a variety of new techniques, and refining existing ones. To achieve these exciting scientific goals, many technical challenges must be addressed by the survey instruments. Given the limited resources of the global radio-astronomical community, it is essential that we pool our skills and knowledge. We do not have sufficient resources to enjoy the luxury of re-inventing wheels. We face significant challenges in calibration, imaging, source extraction and measurement, classification and cross-identification, redshift determination, stacking, and data-intensive research. As these instruments extend the observational parameters, we will face further unexpected challenges in calibration, imaging, and interpretation. If we are to realise the full scientific potential of these expensive instruments, it is essential that we devote enough resources and careful study to understanding the instrumental effects and how they will affect the data. We have established an SKA Radio Continuum Survey working group, whose prime role is to maximise science from these instruments by ensuring we share resources and expertise across the projects. Here we describe these projects, their science goals, and the technical challenges which are being addressed to maximise the science return.

EMU is a wide-field radio continuum survey planned for the new Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The primary goal of EMU is to make a deep (rms ∼ 10 μJy/beam) radio continuum survey of the entire Southern sky at 1.3 GHz, extending as far North as +30° declination, with a resolution of 10 arcsec. EMU is expected to detect and catalogue about 70 million galaxies, including typical star-forming galaxies up to z ∼ 1, powerful starbursts to even greater redshifts, and active galactic nuclei to the edge of the visible Universe. It will undoubtedly discover new classes of object. This paper defines the science goals and parameters of the survey, and describes the development of techniques necessary to maximise the science return from EMU.

One of the most intriguing open questions of today's astrophysics is the jet physical properties and the location and the mechanisms for the production of MeV, GeV, and TeV gamma-rays in AGN jets. M87 is a privileged laboratory for a detailed study of the properties of jets, owing to its proximity, its massive black hole, and its conspicuous emission at radio wavelengths and above. We started on November 2009 a monitoring program with the e-EVN at 5 GHz. We present here results of these multi-epoch observations and discuss the two episodes of activity at energy E>100 GeV that occured in this period. One of these observations was obtained at the same day of the first high energy flare. We added to our results literature data obtained with the VLBI and VLA. A clear change in the proper motion velocity of HST-1 is present at the epoch ~2005.5. In the time range 1998 – 2005.5 the apparent velocity is subluminal, and superluminal (~2.7c) after 2005.5.

A breakthrough in the studies of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies has been reached in recent years from the analysis of the Rotation Measure of sources seen through the magnetized cluster medium (Govoni & Feretti 2004). The results obtained can be summarized as follows: (i) magnetic fields are present in all clusters; (ii) at the center of clusters undergoing merger activity the field strenght is around 1 μG, whereas at the center of relaxed cooling core clusters the intensity is much higher (~ 10 μG); (iii) a model involving a single magnetic field coherence scale is not suitable to describe the observational data, because of different scales of field ordering and tangling.

We present results from new high angular resolution observations of the neutral hydrogen absorption using global VLBI, MERLIN, and VLA observations of the peculiar radio galaxy 3C 293. These results reveal extensive HI absorption against the inner kiloparsec of the radio jet in this source over a wide range of angular scales. From VLBI observations of 11 FR I radio galaxies we find that: 1. parsec scale jets are relativistic; 2. 3C 264 shows a relativistic jet decelerating moving from the core to the extended lobes; 3. 3C 338 is a source with asymmetric parsec scale structure and morphological changes, implying proper motion on both sides of the source; 4. 1144+35 is an extended low power radio galaxy with an apparent superluminal motion in its parsec scale radio structure.

A single form of cholinesterase was detected in the parasitic nematode Parascaris equorum and purified from a low-salt Triton X-100 extract of whole animals by affinity chromatography on an edrophonium–Sepharose matrix. Based on gel-filtration chromatography, sedimentation analysis and SDS–PAGE, such a cholinesterase is an amphiphilic globular (G2) dimer (125–129 kDa, 6·1 S). It includes some hydrophobic domain other than phosphatidylinositol, which gives auto-aggregation, detergent interaction and also anchors the molecule to the cell membrane. The enzyme, probably functional in cholinergic neurotransmission, is an acetylcholinesterase showing a fairly low substrate specificity with thiocholine esters. Electrostatic interactions seem to play a major role in the catalytic activity. Studies with inhibitors gave complete inhibition with 1 mM eserine, low sensitivity for procainamide and for tetra(monoisopropyl)pyrophosphortetramide as well as higher inhibition with edrophonium chloride and 1,5-bis(4allyldimethylammoniumphenyl)-pentan-3-one dibromide. The enzyme also showed excess-substrate inhibition with acetylthiocholine. No cross-hybridization occurred between the gene(s) encoding acetylcholinesterase in P. equorum and ace-1 from the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The expression of a single cholinesterase form in P. equorum, unusual in free-living nematodes, could be due to parasitic life adaptation with resulting reduction of locomotor activity.

We have performed sensitive observations of three classical head-tail radio galaxies at λ11.1, 6.3, and 2.8 cm using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope (Zech, 1994). Complete maps of the sources 3C129, NGC1265, and 3C465 were obtained, including the distributions of the linearly polarized intensity. Together with the low-frequency interferometric maps these allow a comprehensive study of their radio spectra and, based on models of particle losses, the derivations of particle ages across these sources. The highest frequency involved allows an unambiguous derivation of the projected magnetic field structure, unimpeded by Faraday effects. Here we focus on NGC1265, which is located in the Perseus Cluster.

Diffuse radio sources in clusters remain a poorly understood phenomenon. They are very extended sources (0.4-0.6 Mpc), of low surface brightness and steep spectrum, which cannot be identified with any active radio galaxy. They are a rare phenomenon, as they have been found so far in few clusters of galaxies. This paper reviews the current findings about this kind of sources, and the suggestions about their formation and evolution.

We shortly discuss here the parsec scale information presently available on the extended low power radio galaxy (FR I, Fanaroff and Riley, 1974) NGC6251 (Jones and Wehrle, 1994) and on 11 radio galaxies from the sample presented in Giovannini et al. (1990).

The Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies (Fanaroff & Riley, 1974) presented in this paper belong to the complete sample of low-intermediate luminosity radio galaxies published in Giovannini, Feretti & Comoretto (1990). This sample includes radio galaxies with different morphologies on the arcsecond scale, such as compact sources, core-halos, FRIs and FRIIs.

The variability of CD-24 7599 (V=11.48 mag) was discovered by JCC during observing run XCOV7 of the Whole Earth Telescope (WET, Nather et al. 1990) network in February, 1992. The star was observed as an additional target and 117 hours of high-quality temporal spectroscopic observations were obtained.

Our analysis of these data revealed the presence of 7 independent pulsation modes between 27.0 and 38.1 cycles per day (313 – 441 μHz) with semiamplitudes of 2.1 – 10.2 milli-modulation amplitudes (mma). We showed that peaks at linear combination frequencies detected in the power spectra were not due to eigenmodes excited to visible amplitude by resonant mode coupling.

The ZZ Ceti stars form a class of variable white dwarfs: the hydrogen dominated atmosphere ones, which do pulsate in an instability strip in the effective temperature range 13000K-11500K. We know 22 such ZZ Ceti white dwarfs. Their variations are caused by nonradial g-mode pulsations with periods are in the range 100-1000 seconds.

A subsample of the ZZ Ceti stars shows amplitude variations on time scales of the order of one month. These variations could be driven by nonlinear phenomena.

Abell 115 is an intermediate–redshift cluster (z=0.1971) well studied at different wavelengths (see Giovannini et al., 1987 and references therein).
