Emissive PbS/CdS core/shell nanosheets are synthesized using a cation-exchange method. A significant blue-shift of the photoluminescence is observed, indicating a stronger quantum confinement in the PbS core as its thickness is reduced to eight atomic layers. High resolution transmission-electron-microscopy images of the cross-sections of the core/shell nanosheets show atomically sharp interfaces between PbS and CdS. Accurate analysis of the thickness of each layer reveals the relationship between the energy-gap and the thickness in the extremely one-dimensionally confined nanostructure.

A scalable approach for synthesis of ultra-thin (<10 nm) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) films on stretchable polymeric materials is presented. Specifically, magnetron sputtering from pure TMD targets, such as MoS2 and WS2, was used for growth of amorphous precursor films at room temperature on polydimethylsiloxane substrates. Stacks of different TMD films were grown upon each other and integrated with optically transparent insulating layers such as boron nitride. These precursor films were subsequently laser annealed to form high quality, few-layer crystalline TMDs. This combination of sputtering and laser annealing is commercially scalable and lends itself well to patterning. Analysis by Raman spectroscopy, scanning probe, optical, and transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm our assertions and illustrate annealing mechanisms. Electrical properties of simple devices built on flexible substrates are correlated to annealing processes. This new approach is a significant step toward commercial-scale stretchable 2D heterostructured nanoelectronic devices.

Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) we observed atomic scale interference patterns on quasi-freestanding WSe2 islands grown on top of graphene. The bias-independent double atomic size periodicity of these patterns and the sharp Brillouin zone edge revealed by 2D STM Fourier analysis indicate formation of optical phonon standing waves due to scattering on intercalating defects supporting these islands. Standing wave patterns of both synchronized and non-synchronized optical phonons, corresponding to resonant and non-resonant phonon scattering regimes, were experimentally observed. We also found the symmetry breaking effect for individual phonon wave packets, one of the unique features distinguishing phonon standing waves. We show that vibrational and electronic anharmonicities are responsible for STM detection of these patterns. A significant contribution to the interference contrast arises from quantum zero-point oscillations.

We present a route for direct growth of boron nitride via a polyborazylene to h-BN conversion process. This two-step growth process ultimately leads to a >25x reduction in the root-mean-square surface roughness of h-BN films when compared to a high temperature growth on Al2O3(0001) and Si(111) substrates. Additionally, the stoichiometry is shown to be highly dependent on the initial polyborazylene deposition temperature. Importantly, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene transferred to direct-grown boron nitride films on Al2O3 at 400 °C results in a >1.5x and >2.5x improvement in mobility compared to CVD graphene transferred to Al2O3 and SiO2 substrates, respectively, which is attributed to the combined reduction of remote charged impurity scattering and surface roughness scattering. Simulation of mobility versus carrier concentration confirms the importance of limiting the introduction of charged impurities in the h-BN film and highlights the importance of these results in producing optimized h-BN substrates for high performance graphene and TMD devices.

The catalytic influence of Ni, Zr2Ni5, and LaNi5 on the dehydrogenation properties of milled MgH2 was investigated. MgH2 milled in the presence of Ni (5 wt%) and Zr2Ni5 (5 wt%) catalysts for 2 h showed apparent activation energies, EA, of 81 and 79 kJ/mol, respectively, corresponding to ∼50% decrease in EA and a moderate decrease (∼100 °C) in the decomposition temperature (Tdec). A further 27 °C decrease in Tdec was observed after milling with 10 wt%Ni. Based on the EA values, the catalytic activity decreased in the following order: Ni ≈ Zr2Ni5 > LaNi5. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the milled and dehydrogenated states of the hydrides modified with Ni catalyst revealed that the observed reduction in EA may be due to the ability of Ni catalyst to decrease the amount of oxygen atoms in defective positions that are capable of blocking catalytically active sites thereby enhancing the dehydrogenation kinetics. In particular, our results reveal a strong correlation between the type of oxygen species adsorbed on Ni-modified MgH2 and the EA of the dehydrogenation reaction.

In the past two decades, there has been growing interests in the design and improvement of thermoelectric (TE) materials and devices largely due to their potential use in technologies such as: 1) the conversion of waste heat to electricity, 2) solid-state refrigeration and heating, 3) biomedical batteries, and 4) power sources for both ground and space-based electronics.1 Recent research has suggested that by using nanotechnology (i.e. nanostructuring / nanoengineering) large advances can be gained in controlling interfaces to hinder thermal transport while allowing electrical movement. Thin film structuring of thermoelectric materials potentially offers several advantages over bulk thermoelectric materials especially for cooling applications. Furthermore, others have advocated that by making thermoelectric materials very small, one can achieve an enhanced ZT (the thermoelectric figure of merit) due to quantum confinement effects.2-5 The structure and physical properties of doped fullerene materials were investigated for use as electrically conducting phonon blocking layers. The synthesis and thermal properties of ZnxC60 thin films are reported. Preliminary results have shown the formation of amorphous fullerides structures with thermal conductivities as low as 0.13 Wm-1K-1. Physical and structural measurements (e.g. Electron Microscopy, Electron Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy) will be reported detailing the unique structure-property relationships in these materials.

The topology of conventional noble-metal-coated switch counterfaces creates modes of switch failure via fouling, arcing, and local melting when impacted. To avoid these failure phenomena, compliant conductive contact surfaces of vertically aligned multi-wall nanotube arrays grown on conductive substrates have been fabricated. Infiltration of the array by noble metal results in a robust compliant switch contact surface. Cyclic hot-switch testing of the nanotube based switch, via modified nano-indentation, results in performance surpassing conventional designs with stable resistance of 0.4Ω over 3000 cycles. Investigating the physical performance of the array shows the array is compacted less than 3% over the first 500 cycles with no observable compaction through the remaining cycles. The improvement in performance of the nanotube based switch is attributed to the ability for the compliant contact surface to conform to the probe tip geometry, increasing the effective contact surface area.

Six nanocomposite coatings of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), Au, diamond like carbon and MoS2 have been studied by in situ tribometry. The coatings all had a nominal MoS2 content of between 14 and 18 mol%, while the concentrations of the other components were varied. Steady state friction coefficients in both dry (0.04–0.05) and wet sliding conditions (0.06–0.08) were similar for all coatings. However, by in situ tribometry, wear mechanisms were found to differ depending on coating composition and test environment humidity. Friction spiking in high YSZ coatings was identified with local plowing and scoring of the track followed by an extrusion of transfer film material. Trends in coating hardness and modulus are correlated to composition and coating wear processes.

With the advent of the modem analytical electron microscope with its ultrahigh vacuum conditions, extremely high current density in a very small probe, and its light element analysis capability, it is imperative that contamination of the TEM sample, particularly by hydrocarbons, is eliminated. The degree of cleanliness required for analysis using surface sensitive techniques is also much greater than for other forms of analysis. Contamination of samples can occur (a) prior to analysis, due to the way samples are prepared or handled, or (b) during analysis. Examples of surface contamination prior to analysis and during analysis will be given, in order to illustrate their effect on an analysis.Polished Si, Ni, and Ti bulk samples and pre-thinned TEM Ni and Ti samples were intentionally contaminated by two methods. One set of samples was put on a liquid nitrogen cooled stage for one hour in a diffusion pumped Gatan Duomill in which the liquid nitrogen cold trap above the diffusion pump was intentionally left warm. The other set was contaminated by dipping them into a 100 ml solution of acetone containing 0.04 g of an acetone-soluble low temperature wax. Two commercially available plasma cleaners, specifically designed for eliminating hydrocarbon contamination, were used to clean the samples. The bulk samples were examined with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the TEM samples were examined in a 200 keV analytical TEM. The results from these experiments will be discussed.
