The new mineral marchettiite (IMA2017-066) is the natural equivalent of ammonium hydrogen urate. It has a simple molecular formula C5H7N5O3 and can be alternatively written as (NH4)C5H3N4O3. Marchettiite was found in a cleft at Mount Cervandone, Devero Valley, Piedmont, Italy, where it occurs as aggregates of opaque pale pink to white, platy prismatic crystals. This mineral has a white streak, dull and opaque lustre, it is not fluorescent and has a hardness of 2–2.5 (Mohs’ scale). The tenacity is brittle and crystals have a good cleavage parallel to {001}. The calculated density is 1.69 g/cm3. Marchettiite is biaxial (–) with 2V of 47.24°; the optical properties of marchettiite were determined by periodic-DFT methods providing the following values: α = 1.372, β = 1.681 and γ = 1.768. No twinning was observed. Electron microprobe analyses gave the following chemical formula: C4.99H6.97N4.91O3.00. Although the small crystal size did not allow refinement of structural data by single-crystal diffraction, we were able to refine the structure by powder micro X-ray diffraction. Marchettiite has space group P$\bar{1}$ and the following unit-cell parameters: a = 3.6533(2) Å, b = 10.2046(7) Å, c = 10.5837(7) Å, α = 113.809(5)°, β = 91.313(8)°, γ = 92.44(1)° and V = 360.312 Å3. The strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 9.784(50)(001); 8.663(80)(01$\bar{1}$); 5.659(100)(011); 3.443(100)(10$\bar{1}$); 3.241(70)(003) and 3.158(100)(1$\bar{1}\bar{1})$. Marchettiite is named after Gianfranco Marchetti, the mineral collector who found this mineral.

The crystal chemistry and crystal structure of the rare earth element phosphates, monazite-(Ce), Ce(PO4), and xenotime-(Y), Y(PO4), as well as the arsenates, gasparite-(Ce), Ce(AsO4), and chernovite-(Y), Y(AsO4), from the hydrothermal quartz-bearing fissures, related to pegmatites overprinted by amphibolite facies, cropping out at Mt. Cervandone, Western Alps, Piedmont, Italy, have been investigated by means of electron microprobe analysis in wavelength dispersion mode and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The chemical data reveal the occurrence of a full solid solution among the isostructural chernovite-(Y) and xenotime-(Y) with tetragonal symmetry, whereas a wide miscibility gap is observed for the isostructural gasparite-(Ce) and monazite-(Ce) of Mt. Cervandone, with monoclinic symmetry. A significant chemical heterogeneity has been observed for several investigated samples, especially related to the Th content, which is locally enriched in ThSiO4 grains. The analysis of the refined structural models demonstrates the significant control played by the composition of the tetrahedrally-coordinated (As,P)-bearing sites on the bulk unit-cell volume, and on the size and shape of the (REE)-coordination polyhedra.

Two models based on convolutional neural networks are trained to predict the two-dimensional instantaneous velocity-fluctuation fields at different wall-normal locations in a turbulent open-channel flow, using the wall-shear-stress components and the wall pressure as inputs. The first model is a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) which directly predicts the fluctuations, while the second one reconstructs the flow fields using a linear combination of orthonormal basis functions, obtained through proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and is hence named FCN-POD. Both models are trained using data from direct numerical simulations at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_{\tau } = 180$ and 550. Being able to predict the nonlinear interactions in the flow, both models show better predictions than the extended proper orthogonal decomposition (EPOD), which establishes a linear relation between the input and output fields. The performance of the models is compared based on predictions of the instantaneous fluctuation fields, turbulence statistics and power-spectral densities. FCN exhibits the best predictions closer to the wall, whereas FCN-POD provides better predictions at larger wall-normal distances. We also assessed the feasibility of transfer learning for the FCN model, using the model parameters learned from the $Re_{\tau }=180$ dataset to initialize those of the model that is trained on the $Re_{\tau }=550$ dataset. After training the initialized model at the new $Re_{\tau }$, our results indicate the possibility of matching the reference-model performance up to $y^{+}=50$, with $50\,\%$ and $25\,\%$ of the original training data. We expect that these non-intrusive sensing models will play an important role in applications related to closed-loop control of wall-bounded turbulence.

Cobaltite-rich mineralization from the iron skarns of the Traversella magnetite mine (Western Alps, Italy) was studied by reflected-light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. Cobaltite is found in carbonate-chlorite-rich rocks at the margins of the main magnetite masses, where it forms disseminations and metasomatic veinlets that postdate the formation of magnetite. The paragenesis includes cobaltite (± arsenopyrite), bismuthinite, pyrrhotite and/or pyrite, chalcopyrite, carbonates, talc, chlorite and native gold, and is indicative of a low-sulfidation environment. The sulfarsenides show oscillatory and sector zoning, which indicates disequilibrium during crystal growth. Compositional variations are mainly due to variations in the Co/Fe ratio of arsenopyrite and in either the Co/Fe or the Ni/(Fe + Co) ratios of the coexisting cobaltite. The Ni contents are low to very low in the cobaltites (<2.4 wt.%) and very low in the arsenopyrites (<0.16 wt.%). The As/S molar ratios in the cobaltites are highly variable (0.59−1.00) and show a broad negative correlation with the Fe contents. The formation of cobaltite is related to circulation of relatively low-temperature (<∼300°C), (Co,As,Bi)-rich fluids during the retrograde sulfidation stage which followed the formation of magnetite. The apparent restriction of cobaltite (+ bismuthinite ± arsenopyrite) to the margins of the main magnetite columns may reflect the establishment of thermochemical gradients around the main direction of infiltration of the retrograde metasomatic fluids.

Debattistiite, ideally Ag9Hg0.5As6S12Te2, is a new mineral (IMA-CNMNC 2011-098) from the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs as very rare tabular euhedral crystals up to 150 μm across in cavities in dolomitic marble, associated with realgar, rutile, trechmannite and hutchinsonite. Debattistiite is opaque with a metallic lustre and a grey streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 80 kg mm–2 (range: 65–94), corresponding to a Mohs hardness of 2–2½. In reflected light debattistiite is dark grey, highly bireflectant and weakly pleochroic from dark grey to a slightly greenish grey. Between crossed polars it is highly anisotropic with brownish to blue rotation tints. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths (Rmin and Rmax) are 27.2, 34.5 (471.1 nm), 25.5, 31.0 (548.3 nm), 22.9, 28.4 (586.6 nm), and 20.1, 25.2 (652.3 nm), respectively.

Debattistiite is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 7.832(5), b = 8.606(4), c = 10.755(5) Å, α = 95.563(9), β = 95.880(5), γ = 116.79(4)°, V = 635.3(6) Å3 and Z = 1. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0826 for 795 reflections with I > 2σ(I)] consists of corner-sharing AsS3 pyramids forming three-membered distorted rings linked by Ag atoms in triangular or tetrahedral coordination.

The five strongest powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are as follows: 10.56 (6) (001); 3.301 (5) (12); 2.991 (4) (22); 2.742 (1) and 2.733 (10) (30). A mean of nine electron microprobe analyses gave: Ag 44.88, Hg 4.49, As 20.77, S 17.72, Te 11.82; total 99.68 wt.%, which corresponds to Ag9.02Hg0.49As6.012S11.98Te2.01, on the basis of 29.5 atoms. The new mineral is named for Luca De Battisti, a systematic mineralogist and expert on the minerals of Lengenbach quarry.

One metamorphic and four magmatic aegirines, together with two end-member aegirines synthesized at atmospheric pressure and different temperatures, were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The limited compositional differences allow the polyhedral volumes to be almost constant in all the aegirines investigated( VM1 ≈ 11.0 Å3; VM2 ≈ 26.3 Å3; VT ≈ 2.21 Å3). However, differences in polyhedral distortions are responsible for the cell-volume variations, reflected mainly in the change of a and β cell parameters. Cell volume is only partly related to the composition of these aegirines: with increasing formation temperature, an increase in the unit-cell volume of ~1.2 Å3 is observed, while a significant contraction of the cell volume occurs during high-pressure formation. As the difference in cell volume between the two synthetic aegirines is ascribed to the different conditions of synthesis temperature, the same interpretation could be adopted for the differences observed in natural aegirines.

Deveroite-(Ce), ideally Ce2(C2O4)3·10H2O, is a new mineral (IMA 2013-003) found in the alpine fissures of Mount Cervandone, overlooking the Devero Valley, Piedmont, Italy. It occurs as sprays of colourless elongated tabular, acicular prisms only on cervandonite-(Ce). It has a white streak, a vitreous lustre, is not fluorescent and has a hardness of 2–2.5 (Mohs' scale). The tenacity is brittle and the crystals have a perfect cleavage along {010}. The calculated density is 2.352 g/cm3. Deveroite-(Ce) is biaxial (–) with 2V of ∼77°, is not pleochroic and the extinction angle (β ∧ c) is ∼27°. No twinning was observed. Electron microprobe analyses gave the following chemical formula: (Ce1.01Nd0.33La0.32Pr0.11Y0.11Sm0.01Pb0.04U0.03Th0.01Ca0.04)2.01(C2O4)2.99·9.99H2O. Although synchrotron radiation was not used to solve the structure of deveroite-(Ce) the extremely small size of the sample (13 μm × 3 μm × 1 μm) did not allow us to obtain reliable structural data. However, it was possible to determine the space group (monoclinic, P21/c) and the unit-cell parameters, which are: a = 11.240(8) Å, b = 9.635(11) Å, c = 10.339(12) Å, β = 114.41(10)°, V = 1019.6 Å3. The strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 10.266(100)(100); 4.816(35.26)(21); 3.415(27.83)(300); 5.125(24.70)(200); and 4.988(22.98)(111). Deveroite-(Ce) is named in recognition of Devero valley and Devero Natural Park.

Philrothite, ideally TlAs3S5, is a new mineral from the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs as very rare crystals up to 200 mm across on realgar associated with smithite, rutile and sartorite. Philrothite is opaque with a metallic lustre and shows a dark brown streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 128 kg/mm2 (range: 120–137) (Mohs hardness of 3–3½). In reflected light philrothite is moderately bireflectant and weakly pleochroic from dark grey to light grey. Under crossed polars it is anisotropic with grey to bluish rotation tints. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths (Rmin and Rmax) are: 26.5, 28.8 (471.1 nm), 25.4, 27.2 (548.3 nm), 24.6, 26.3 (586.6 nm) and 24.0, 25.1 (652.3 nm), respectively.

Philrothite is monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 8.013(2), b = 24.829(4), c = 11.762(3) Å, β = 132.84(2)°, V = 1715.9(7) Å3, Z = 8. It represents the N = 4 homologue of the sartorite homologous series. In the crystal structure [R1 = 0.098 for 1217 reflections with I > 2σ(I)], Tl assumes tricapped prismatic sites alternating to form columns perpendicular to the b axis. Between the zigzag walls of Tl coordination prisms, coordination pyramids of As(Sb) form diagonally-oriented double layers separated by broader interspaces which house the lone electron pairs of these elements.

The eight strongest calculated powder-diffraction lines [d in Å(I/I0) (hkl)] are: 12.4145 (52) (020); 3.6768 (100) (61); 3.4535 (45) (131); 3.0150 (46) (53); 2.8941 (52) (81); 2.7685 (76) (230); 2.7642 (77) (34); 2.3239 (52) (092). A mean of five electron microprobe analyses gave Tl 26.28(12), Pb 6.69(8), Ag 2.50(4), Cu 0.04(2), Hg 0.07(2), As 32.50(13), Sb 3.15(3), S 26.35(10), total 97.58 wt.%, corresponding, on the basis of a total of nine atoms, to (Tl0.789Pb0.198)∑=0.987 (As2.662Sb0.159Ag0.142Cu0.004Hg0.002)∑=2.969S5.044. The new mineral has been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (2013-066) and named for Philippe Roth (b. 1963), geophysicist and well known mineral expert on the Lengenbach minerals for more than 25 years.

The crystal structure of the rare mineral dalnegroite, Tl5−xPb2x(As,Sb)21−xS34 with x ≈ 1, was determined for a crystal from Lengenbach, Binn Valley, Switzerland. The structure is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 16.218(3), b = 42.546(7), c = 8.558(1) Å , α = 95.70(4), β = 90.18(3), γ = 96.38(4)°, V = 5838.9(9) Å3, Z = 4. Refinement of an isotropic model led to an R1 index of 0.0536 for 22226 observed reflections and 980 parameters, and R1 = 0.0590 for all 25266 independent reflections. Although dalnegroite cannot be considered a layered compound, its structure can be usefully described as a regular alternation of two kinds of layers stacked along the b axis, with four layers in the unit cell: (1) a layer 7.8 Å thick, at y ≈ 0.15 and 0.65, can be considered as derived from the SnS archetype; (2) a layer 13.6 Å thick, at y ≈ 0.35 and 0.85, derived from the PbS archetype. Different chemical compositions, such as Tl:Pb and Sb:As ratios, for different samples belonging to the chabournéite-dalnegroite family could play a central role in controlling different degrees of order, leading to different superstructures.

Tazzoliite, ideally Ba2CaSr0.5Na0.5Ti2Nb3SiO17[PO2(OH)2]0.5, is a new mineral (IMA 2011-018) from Monte delle Basse, Euganei Hills, Galzignano Terme, Padova, Italy. It occurs as lamellar pale orange crystals, which are typically a few m m thick and up to 0.4 mm long, closely associated with a diopsidic pyroxene and titanite. Tazzoliite is transparent. It has a white streak, a pearly lustre, is not fluorescent and has a hardness of 6 (Mohs' scale). The tenacity is brittle and the crystals have a perfect cleavage along {010}. The calculated density is 4.517 g cm–3. Tazzoliite is biaxial (–) with 2Vmeas of ~50º, it is not pleochroic and the average refractive index is 2.04. No twinning was observed. Electronmicroprobe analyses gave the following chemical formula: (Ba1.93Ca1.20Sr0.52Na0.25Fe0.102+)Σ4 (Nb2.88Ti2.05Ta0.07Zr0.01V0.015+)Σ5.02SiO17[(P0.13Si0.12S0.07)Σ0.32O0.66(OH)0.66][F0.09(OH)0.23]Σ0.32.

Tazzoliite is orthorhombic, space group Fmmm, with unit-cell parameters a = 7.4116(3), b = 20.0632(8), c = 21.4402(8) Å, V = 3188.2(2) Å3 and Z = 8. The crystal structure, obtained from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, was refined to R1(F2) = 0.063. It consists of a framework of Nb(Ti) octahedra and BaO7 polyhedra sharing apexes or edges, and Si tetrahedra sharing apexes with Nb(Ti) octahedra and BaO7 polyhedra. The structure, which is related to the pyrochlore structure, contains three Nb(Ti) octahedra: two are Nb dominant and one is Ti dominant. Chains of A2O8 polyhedra [A2 being occupied by Sr(Ca, Fe)] extend along [100] and are surrounded by Nb octahedra. Channels formed by six Nb(Ti) octahedra and two tetrahedra, or four A1O8(OH) polyhedra (A1 being occupied by Ba), alternate along [100]. The channels are partially occupied by [PO2(OH)2] in two possible mutually exclusive positions, alternating with fully occupied A3O7 polyhedral pairs [A3 being occupied by Ca(Na)]. The seven strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 3.66 (60) (044), 3.16 (30) (153), 3.05 (100) (204), 2.98 (25) (240), 2.84 (50) (064), 1.85 (25) (400) and 1.82 (25) (268). Raman spectra of tazzoliite were collected in the range 150–3700 cm–1 and confirm the presence of OH groups. Tazzoliite is named in honour of Vittorio Tazzoli in recognition of his contributions to the fields of mineralogy and crystallography.

Dalnegroite, ideally Tl4Pb2(As12Sb8)Σ20S34, is a new mineral from Lengenbach, Binntal, Switzerland. It occurs as anhedral to subhedral grains up to 200 μm across, closely associated with realgar, pyrite, Sb-rich seligmanite in a gangue of dolomite. Dalnegroite is opaque with a submetallic lustre and shows a brownish-red streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 87 kg mm-2 (range: 69—101) (Mohs hardness ∼3—3½). In reflected light, dalnegroite is highly bireflectant and weakly pleochroic, from white to a slightly greenish-grey. In cross-polarized light, it is highly anisotropic with bluish to green rotation tints and red internal reflections.

According to chemical and X-ray diffraction data, dalnegroite appears to be isotypic with chabournéite, Tl5-xPb2x(Sb,As)21-xS34. It is triclinic, probable space group P1, with a = 16.217(7) Å, b = 42.544(9) Å, c = 8.557(4) Å, α = 95.72(4)°, β = 90.25(4)°, γ = 96.78(4)°, V = 5832(4) Å3, Z = 4.

The nine strongest powder-diffraction lines [d(Å) (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 3.927 (100) ( 10 0); 3.775 (45) (22); 3.685 (45) (60); 3.620 (50) (440); 3.124 (50) (2); 2.929 (60) (42); 2.850 (70) (42); 2.579 (45) (0 2); 2.097 (60) (024). The mean of 11 electron microprobe analyses gave elemental concentrations as follows: Pb 10.09(1) wt.%, Tl 20.36(1), Sb 23.95(1), As 21.33(8), S 26.16(8), totalling 101.95 wt.%, corresponding to Tl4.15Pb2.03(As11.86Sb8.20)S34. The new mineral is named for Alberto Dal Negro, Professor in Mineralogy and Crystallography at the University of Padova since 1976.

Dervillite, As2AsS2, has been found in a sample from the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs as very rare crystals up to 200 μm across on jordanite. Dervillite is opaque with a metallic lustre and shows a dark brown streak. The structure is monoclinic, space group Pc, with a = 9.6155(7), b = 12.9331(8), c = 6.8616(5) A ˚ , b = 99.352(8)º, V = 842.0(1) Å3 and Z = 8. In the crystal structure [R1 = 0.060 for 2370 reflections with I > 2σ(I)], silver adopts various coordinations extending from quasi linear to quasi tetrahedral whereas arsenic forms very peculiar crystal-chemical environments, such as As(S2As) and As(S2AsAg). Such metalloid–metalloid or metal–metalloid bonds account for the apparent charge imbalance observed in the chemical formula.

Xenotime-(Y), (Y,REE)PO4, and thortveitite, (Sc, Y)2Si2O7, in a miarolitic cavity in a niobium, yttrium, fluorine (NYF) granitic pegmatite at Baveno, Verbania, Southern Alps, Italy, were investigated by electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Fluorine has an important role as a complexing agent for Y and REEs in supercritical pegmatitic fluids; annitesiderophyllite and chamosite are the most likely sources of the Y and REEs. The thortveitite from Baveno contains up to 3.20 wt.% SnO2, an unusually high Sn content. Xenotime-(Y) is enriched in Gd in comparison to other Alpine xenotimes. Quantitative chemical data and measurements of the lattice parameters show that a higher scandium content results in a smaller unit-cell volume in thortveitite. The substitution of REEs for Y up to ∼20 mol.% has little effect on the unit cell of xenotime-(Y). The textures of xenotime-(Y) and thortveitite provide information about the dissolution and crystallization processes in the miarolitic cavity.

The crystal chemistry of a meso-octahedral Li,Be-bearing mica from the Harding pegmatite (Dixon, Taos County, New Mexico, USA) has been investigated by constant-wavelength single-crystal neutron diffraction at 20 K, single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 100 K and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The chemical composition based on ICP-AES analysis leads to the following chemical formula (calculated on the basis of 12 oxygen atoms): Ca(Na0.26K0.04Ca0.69)∑0.99M(Li0.29Mg0.03Fe0.023+Al1.78)∑2.12T(Al1.73Be0.16Si2.11)S4.00O12H2.53. The apparent excess of H is probably due to the fact that the fraction of H2O was assumed by difference to 100 wt.%, and slightly overestimated. On the basis of the previous experimental findings on Li,Be-bearing mica, X-ray (at 100 K) and neutron (at 20 K) structure refinements were performed in the space groups Cc and C2/c. The neutron structure refinement in the space group Cc offers a view about the (Al,Be,Si)-tetrahedral ordering: the best fit of the refinement was reached with the T1 and T4 sites occupied by (Be + Al) and T2 and T3 fully occupied by Si. This leads to a final population of T(Al1.88Be0.12Si2.00)∑4.00 p.f.u., in reasonable agreement with the chemical analysis. The neutron refinement provides unambigous evidence of the occurrence of Li at the M1 site. The refined fraction of Li at the M1 site ranges between 0.27 and 0.29 a.p.f.u., in excellent agreement with the chemical analysis. The presence of Li, at least at a significant level, at the M2 (and M3) site can be ruled out, as a full site occupancy with the scattering length of Al was obtained. The location of the H sites and the complex hydrogen-bonding scheme are described. A comparison between the structure features of this Li,Be-mica and other brittle micas is carried out.

Fassinaite, ideally Pb22+(S2O3)(CO3), is a new mineral from the Trentini mine, Mount Naro, Vicenza Province, Veneto, Italy (holotype locality). It is also reported from the Erasmus adit, Schwarzleo District, Leogang, Salzburg, Austria and the Friedrich-Christian mine, Schapbach, Black Forest, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany (cotype localities). At the Italian type locality it occurs as acicular [010]. colourless crystals up to 200 μn long, closely associated with galena, quartz and anglesite. At the Austrian cotype locality it is associated with cerussite, rare sulphur and very rare phosgenite. At the German cotype locality anglesite is the only associated phase. Fassinaite crystals commonly have flat chisel-shaped terminations. They are transparent with vitreous to adamantine lustre and a white streak. Fassinaite is brittle with an irregular fracture and no discernible cleavage; the estimated Mohs hardness is 11/2—2. The calculated density for the type material is 6.084 g cm–3 (on the basis of the empirical formula), whereas the X-ray density is 5.947 g cm–3. In common with other natural lead thiosulphates (i.e. sidpietersite and steverustite) fassinaite has intense internal reflections, which do not allow satisfactory optical data to be collected; the crystals are length-slow and have very high birefringence. The mineral is not fluorescent.

Fassinaite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with unit-cell parameters (for the holotype material) a = 16.320(2), b = 8.7616(6), c = 4.5809(7) Å, V = 655.0(1) Å3, a:b:c = 1.863:1:0.523, Z = 4. Single-crystal structural studies were carried out on crystals from all three localities: R1(F) values range between 0.0353 and 0.0596. The structure consists of rod-like arrangements of Pb-centred polyhedra that extend along the [010] direction. These ‘rods’ are linked, alternately, by (CO3)2– and (S2O3)2– groups. The (S2O3)2– groups point alternately left and right (in a projection on [001] with [010] set vertical) if the apex occupied by the S2– in the thiosulphate group is defined to be the atom giving the direction. The lead atoms are nine-coordinated by seven oxygen atoms and two sulphur (S2–) atoms. The eight strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 4.410 (39) (101), 4.381 (59) (020), 4.080 (62) (400), 3.504 (75) (301), 3.108 (100) (121), 2.986 (82) (420), 2.952 (49) (221) and 2.736 (60) (321). Electron-microprobe analyses produce an empirical formula Pb2.01(1)(S1.82(2)O3)CO3 (on the basis of six oxygen atoms). The presence of both carbonate and thiosulphate groups was corroborated by Raman spectra, which are discussed in detail. Fassinaite is named after Bruno Fassina (b. 1943), an Italian mineral collector who discovered the mineral in 2009.

Mn-rich graftonite, (Ca,Mn2+)(Fe2+,Mn2+)2(PO4)2, ferrisicklerite, Li1–x(Fe3+,Mn2+)PO4, manganoan apatite, (Ca,Mn2+,Fe2+Mg)(PO4)3Cl, staně kite, Fe3+Mn2+O(PO4) and Mn-rich vivianite, (Fe2+)3(PO4)2·8H2O, occurring in a granitic pegmatite at Soè Valley (central Alps, Italy) were characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microprobe analyses. Geochemically, the Mn-rich graftonite phases are poorly evolved Fe/Mn-phosphates of rare-earth elements-lithium (REE-Li) granitic pegmatites. The assemblage Mn-rich graftonite + ferrisicklerite + staněkite has rarely beendocumen ted in pegmatites. Inthe Soè Valley pegmatite, ferrisicklerite forms exsolution lamellae with Mn-rich graftonite associated with manganoan apatite and staněkite. Graftonite is associated with Mn-rich vivianite. Powder and single-crystal XRD data indicate that the unit-cell volume of graftonite increases as a function of Mn2+ content. Staněkite shows a distinctly smaller unit-cell volume with respect to previously reported staněkites, probably due to reduced Mn2+. Vivianite with significant Mn2+ has a unit-cell volume similar to nearly Mn-free vivianite. The formation of Mn-rich graftonite and manganoan apatite is related to destabilization of Mn-rich almandine and biotite during pegmatite formation. Ferrisicklerite forms exsolution lamellae along the 010 cleavage planes of Mn-rich graftonite, whereas staněkite forms by alterationof ferrisicklerite and Mn-rich vivianite due to circulation of late-stage hydrothermal fluids.

Raberite, ideally Tl5Ag4As6SbS15, is a new mineral from Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs very rarely as euhedral crystals up to 150 m m across associated with yellow needle-like smithite, realgar, hatchite and probable trechmannite, edenharterite, jentschite and two unidentified sulfosalts. Raberite is opaque with a metallic lustre and has a dark brown–red streak. It is brittle with a Vickers hardness (VHN10) of 52 kg mm–2 (range 50–55) corresponding to a Mohs hardness of 2½–3. In reflected light raberite is moderately bireflectant and very weakly pleochroic from light grey to a slightly greenish grey. It is very weakly anisotropic with greyish to light blue rotation tints between crossed polars. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths [listed as Rmin, Rmax, (λ)] are 30.6, 31.8 (471.1 nm), 28.1, 29.3 (548.3 nm), 27.1, 28.0 (586.6 nm), and 25.8, 26.9 (652.3 nm).

Raberite is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 8.920(1), b = 9.429(1), c = 20.062(3) Å, α = 79.66(1), β = 88.84(1), γ = 62.72(1)º, V = 1471.6(4) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0827 for 2110 reflections with I > 2σ(I)] consists of columns of nine-coordinate Tl atoms forming irregular polyhedra extending along [001] and forming sheets parallel to (010). The columns are decorated by cornersharing MS3 pyramids (M = As, Sb) and linked by AgS3 triangles. Of the seven M positions, one is dominated by Sb and the others by As; the mean M-S bond distances reflect As ↔ Sb substitution at these sites.

The eight strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [dcalc in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 3.580 (100) (13); 3.506 (58) (23); 3.281 (73) (006); 3.017 (54) (3); 3.001 (98) (133); 2.657 (51) (226); 2.636 (46) (300); 2.591 (57) (330). A mean of 9 electron microprobe analyses gave Tl 39.55(13), Ag 18.42(8), Cu 0.06(2), As 17.08(7), Sb 5.61(6), S 19.15(11); total 99.87 wt.%, which corresponds to Tl4.85Ag4.28Cu0.02As5.72Sb1.16S14.97 with 31 atoms per formula unit. The new mineral has been approved by the IMA-CNMNC Commission (IMA 2012-017) and is named for Thomas Raber, an expert on Lengenbach minerals.
