Objectives: Cognitive reserve moderates the effects of gray matter (GM) atrophy on cognitive function in neurological disease. Broadly speaking, Reserve explains how persons maintain function in the face of cerebral injury in cognitive and other functional domains (e.g., physical, social). Personality, as operationalized by the Five Factor Model (FFM), is also implicated as a moderator of this relationship. It is conceivable that these protective mechanisms are related. Prior studies suggest links between Reserve and personality, but the degree to which these constructs overlap and buffer the clinical effects of neuropathology is unclear. Methods: We evaluated Reserve and FFM traits—Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness—in a cohort of 67 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. We also examined the extent to which FFM traits and aspects of Reserve interact in predicting cognitive processing speed. Results: Retrospectively reported educational/occupational achievement was associated with higher Openness, and childhood social engagement was associated with higher Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Current involvement in exercise activities and social activities was associated with Extraversion, current involvement in hobbies was associated with Neuroticism, and current receptive behaviors were associated with Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. When tested as predictors, Conscientiousness and childhood enrichment activities interacted in predicting cognitive processing speed after accounting for age, disease duration, disability, and GM volume. Conclusions: Childhood enrichment activities and Conscientiousness have a synergistic effect on cognitive processing speed. Current findings have implications for using psychological interventions to foster both Reserve and adaptive personality characteristics to stave off clinical symptoms in MS. Summary
Introduction
Almost all commentators note the multiplicity of the World Bank's functions and objectives. Oliver's (1971, 1975) accounts of the Bretton Woods and subsequent negotiations demonstrate differences of opinion, both between the Americans and the British, and also within the US administration itself, about what the World Bank should do, going back to the very origins of the organisation. Gavin and Rodrik (1995: 329) state that the debate surrounding its creation was about what it should do, not just how it should do it. Naïm (1994) accuses the current structure of generating goal congestion. We argue that the World Bank's strength arises from complementarity among these functions, and that conditionality is the cement that generates this complementarity. We see the World Bank's objectives as being closely aligned with the interests of borrowing countries, and view Bank conditionality, which we interpret in a broad sense, as a mechanism for helping governments realise some of these objectives. We suggest that this view of conditionality meshes well with the ‘Comprehensive Development Framework’ or CDF approach to development assistance which the Bank is now promoting.
The World Bank: a functional analysis
The World Bank is a large and complex organisation comprising a set of imprecisely focused institutions with overlapping responsibilities. It may be analysed in terms of these institutions or alternatively in terms of the economic functions it fulfils. In this chapter, we focus on the Bank's functions and ignore the institutional embodiments of these functions that we have discussed in Gilbert et al. (1996).

The pharmacological treatment of depression and the time elapsed since last seen by a doctor were investigated among 507 adults who subsequently killed themselves. The proportion of people consulting a general practitioner or psychiatrist prior to suicide was lower than reported by the British government in the Health of the Nation document. General practitioners prescribed relatively low doses of antidepressants. Nineteen out of the 115 people receiving antidepressants used the drugs to kill themselves. Our findings emphasise the importance of prescribing adequate doses of antidepressants and underline the need for safer prescribing.

The dielectric quality (defect density, Do and breakdown strength, Fbd) of 150Å SiO2 gate oxide (GOX) films grown by conventional or stacked oxidation scheme are discussed from the leakage measurements of polysilicon capacitors on test structure simulating our submicron CMOS process. Various polysilicon (poly) deposition processes from silane pyrolysis (570°C -620°C) were used by the low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) technique. Both in situ and ex situ poly doping by phosphorus (P) were used to ascertain their impact on the GOX properties. The substructural characteristics of the poly/SiO2 and SiO2/Si interfaces generated by various combinations of GOX and poly deposition processes were done by the high resolution TEM lattice fringe technique under phase contrast mode.
