Summary
The romantic musicals that paired Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the mid-1930s did much to rescue the financially troubled RKO studio from the bankruptcy it had declared in the depths of the Great Depression. From The Gay Divorcee (1934) to Swing Time (1936) the six movies in which they starred all made handsome profits. The most lucrative of these, Top Hat, broke box-office records at Radio City, taking $350,000 in its first three weeks, and was the second-highest grossing film of 1935. In the respected Quigley poll of Hollywood's top box-office stars, Astaire and Rogers ranked fourth in 1935, third in 1936, and seventh in 1937 (all years when Shirley Temple was at number one).
Among the first to blend musical duets and solos into the unfolding relationships of the principal characters, the Astaire/Rogers films mediate notions of selfhood, sexuality and national identity. The glamour and charm of the central couple, the dazzling décor, and the brilliance of the song and dance routines projected the wish-fulfilment fantasies of Depression-audiences. In some of their best films – The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, Swing Time and Shall We Dance – the couple's personification of wide-ranging questions of self and society is nuanced by the contribution of the comic secondary character players such as Helen Broderick, Edward Everett Horton, Eric Blore, Erik Rhodes and Victor Moore, who refine the ideology of individual or national identity and, especially, of romantic love through badinage, displays of affection and comic turns. Honouring a tradition found in stage as well as film comedy that gently mocks the high-fl own fantasies of the lovers, the secondary characters in the Astaire/Rogers films sometimes additionally gesture to the hardships of the Depression, as when in Swing Time the famished ‘Pop’ (Victor Moore) wolfs the club sandwich brought for her lunch by Mabel (Helen Broderick), or when, in the same film, the Dance Academy director (Eric Blore) threatens everyone with the sack if they do not step up to the mark.
Described by Arlene Croce as a ‘key film’, and by John Mueller as the film that established Astaire and Rogers as a team, Roberta features none of the comic secondary performers found in the aforementioned films.

Gram-negative bacilli frequently cause epidemics in high-risk newborn intensive care units. Recently, an epidemic caused by a multiply-resistant K. pneumoniae, serotype 21, occurred in the Vanderbilt University intensive care nursery. The background of this outbreak included an increasing endemic nosocomial sepsis rate, operation of the facility in excess of rated capacity, and increasingly inadequate nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. The epidemic lasted 11 weeks; 26 (12%) of the 232 infants at risk in the unit became colonized. Five infants developed systemic illness and one died. Cohorting, reinforcement of strict handwashing and isolation procedures, and closure of the unit to outborn admissions resulted in rapid termination of the outbreak. Followup studies performed on infants colonized with the epidemic bacterium demonstrated persistent fecal shedding up to 13 months following discharge from the hospital. This epidemic had a detrimental influence on high-risk newborn and obstetric health care delivery in an area encompassing portions of three states. Under a system of progressively more sophisticated referral units, nosocomial infections occurring at a tertiary center can have an impact on other hospitals within the network.

There is increasing evidence that hyperenergetic diets have an impact on memory in rodents. However, it is largely unknown how diets, such as a cafeteria diet (CD), that mimic a Western-type diet act on learning and memory, in particular when fed during early stages of development. Here, we fed lactating dams a CD and exposed both male and female offspring to a novel object discrimination (NOD) task, a two-trial test of recognition memory in which rats exposed to two identical objects during a training/familiarisation trial can discriminate a novel from a familiar object during the subsequent choice trial. The choice trial was performed following inter-trial interval (ITI) delays of up to 4 h. Maternal diet did not have an impact on exploration of the objects by either sex during the familiarisation trial. Control males discriminated the novel from the familiar object, indicating intact memory with an ITI of 1 h, but not 2 or 4 h. The CD delayed this natural forgetting in male rats such that discrimination was also evident after a 2 h ITI. In contrast, control females exhibited discrimination following both 1 and 2 h ITI, but the CD impaired performance. In summary, the present study shows that maternal exposure to the CD programmes NOD in the adult. In better-performing females, dietary programming interferes with NOD, whereas NOD was improved in males after lactational CD feeding.

Summary
In the final three decades of the twentieth century, the world's political economic framework underwent a far-reaching transformation from a state-centric to a neoliberal form (Sewell 2005). In the years following World War II, economies in all areas of the world had been governed by state-centered regulatory regimes. In the wealthy countries of North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, economies were based on free markets and private property, but they were carefully steered and regulated by democratic Keynesian welfare states. In the communist countries, almost all economic activity took place in authoritarian state institutions. And in most of the major countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, governments imposed ambitious schemes of state-led development. Over the course of the 1970s, state-led regulatory regimes entered into crisis. By the 1990s, the communist regimes had fallen or had been thoroughly transformed from within by introducing markets and privatizing production. The advanced capitalist countries had dismantled or watered down their regulatory states by privatizing publicly owned enterprises, lifting capital controls, deregulating markets, and, more selectively, paring back welfare guarantees. And the vast majority of developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America had abandoned important elements of their nationalist development strategies and opened their borders to global flows of capital and goods – some on their own volition and others under the coercive urging of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. All of these countries had become part of a rapidly integrating world market regulated by global rules administered by economic governance institutions such as the World Trade Organization and disciplined by instantaneous global exchanges for currencies, securities, and bonds.

In England & Wales at least 140 000 people present at hospital annually following an episode of deliberate self-harm (DSH), and 12% to 16% make a repeat attempt. The time of greatest risk of repetition is within three months of an attempt. Around 50% of these patients visit their GP in the four to eight weeks after an episode of DSH. Guidelines for the aftercare of patients who have self-harmed in general practice may reduce repetition rates and could possibly have an impact on suicide rates. The aim of this study was to develop a clinical practice guideline for the aftercare of DSH patients in general practice. A modified Delphi technique was used with a consensus group consisting of GPs with an interest in mental health, psychiatrists, a psychologist, a specialist nurse, a voluntary organization and patients with a history of self-harm. The template for the guidelines was based on ICD-10 PHC. Consensus was reached on all points after two rounds of the Delphi and the guidelines were formatted to facilitate their use in the GP consultation. There is a difficulty developing guidelines for common problems where the evidence base is weak. The use of formal consensus methods can be employed but it must be acknowledged that the validity of the resulting guideline is related to the composition of the consensus group, the identification and analysis of any relevant evidence and the method of guideline dissemination. The guidelines are being evaluated in a randomized controlled trial of a general practice based intervention to reduce repeat deliberate self-harm.

Diamond growth rates and quality were studied as a function of source gas composition and correlated with position on the ternary C-H-O diagram. The chemical potentials of carbon and oxygen change dramatically on either side of the H2-CO tie line, leading to large differences in the equilibrium distribution of species. These differences are reflected in the species flux reaching the diamond surface, and hence in the quality and growth rate of the diamond. In situ microbalance measurements in a hot-filament reactor show that the reaction rate is independent of the CO concentration, but decreases with increasing O2. Quality, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, increases as the C/C+O ratio in the source gases is reduced to approach the critical value of 0.5. The stability of the filaments to decarburizing and oxidation are correlated with the carbon and oxygen chemical potentials and hence to the position on the C-H-O diagram. A preliminary ternary diagram for the C-H-F system is presented.
