A selection has been made from the reports received from our correspondents, those which present material of a particularly interesting kind being printed in their entirety, or largely so. It should be emphasized that the choice of countries to be thus represented has depended on the nature of the information presented in the reports, not upon the importance of the countries concerned or upon the character of the reports themselves.

Australia

In 1958 in Australia there was no production such as the 1957 Elizabethan Theatre Trust Hamlet which was seen in each of the States; but each capital city, and some others, saw one or more performances by local companies, amateur or professional. In Sydney, for example, both the Independent Theatre and the Sydney University Players performed Titus Andronicus (the former in a production by John Alden), while the Poetry Society of Australia sponsored several performances of Hamlet (produced by Norma Polonsky, with Keith Buckley as the Prince). In Adelaide, As You Like It was produced by the Teachers' College; in Hobart, The Merchant of Venice by the Repertory Theatre Society (producer, Barbara Manning); in Melbourne, Henry IV Part I by the combined Church of England Grammar Schools; and in Brisbane, King Lear (on an Elizabethan-type stage) by the Twelfth Night Theatre, and Richard II by the Arts Theatre.
