Summary

Ον πώ οϕιν ἐξίτηλον αἰμα Δαιμόνων

Inckrti Frag, Apud Platonem.

“Abiit, evasit, excessit, erupit.”

—Cicero.

“They love the winner of the race,

If only he who prospers, looks

At prizes with a simple grace.”

—Anon.

Quand on n'a pas ce que Ton aime,

Il faut aimer ce que l'on a.

“We start, for soul is wanting there.”

—Byron.

When the collegiate year recommenced once more, I threw off the blue and silver, and turned Pensioner. It was rather an uncommon step, but there had been a precedent for it not long before. A friend of mine after one year's experience of Fellow-Commoner life, had changed his grade, partly from pecuniary motives, and partly to be eligible to a Scholarship. I had both these inducements, and a third still more pressing—my health, which made it necessary for me to shun the luxurious dinners of the upper table. It was coming down a step in life and a sort of confession of poverty on the face of it, but I had the satisfaction of finding that none of my old acquaintance among the Dons, to whose friendship I attached any value, changed their conduct and bearing towards me in the least. And I have generally observed this to be the case, that when a man freely confesses his pecuniary inability to maintain a certain position, he is not held at any discount for it, but his honest determination is rather applauded.
