This very fine bust is another example of the sculptor's power of recreating a bust in three dimensions from a portrait in two. The expression is at once penetrating and humorous, and if Barrow was “low of stature, lean, and of a pale complexion,” his bust is as much alive as the wise alert head in the National Portrait Gallery painted by Claud Lefebre.
This bust in its plain close-fitting gown comes nearer the busts of Roubiliac's middle-class contemporaries such as Handel, Hogarth and Cibber, in the easy undress of their day, than any other in the Library, and offers a curious contrast in that respect with the fuller and more dignified raiment of Bentley, that other and yet greater Master of Trinity commemorated by the sculptor. As Barrow was notorious for his slovenliness, his portraits are not distinguished by outward dignity of dress; yet even here Roubiliac's skill in the rendering of texture comes out in the contrast between the filmy and unsymmetrical lawn bands and the plain cloth of the coat beneath.
