Summary
[Note: The condition of the manuscript has resulted in a few words being lost and in some being too faint for certain identification. Where I have been unable to identify a word or make a comfortable guess, I have placed a question mark with no words in brackets. Where I have made a comfortable guess, I have put the word with a question mark in brackets. The manuscript has almost no punctuation, and I have silently added some. I have similarly normalized afew words, and have expanded some standard abbreviations and silently translated a few Latin forms.
The handwriting in this letter differs from a letter signed by Phips and dated February 21, 1692/3, which is in the holdings of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library; both, however, carry the identifiable signature of William Phips. I am grateful to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for allowing me to examine the letter of February 21, and to the American Antiquarian Society for permission to publish below the letter from Phips to Corwin.]
By his Excellency Sir William Phips Knight Captain General & Governor in chief of their Majesties Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New England to Captain George Corwin High Sheriff of the County of Essex: Whereas Philip English late of Salem Merchant did by his Petition bearing unto the second of March last past set forth that you the sd George Corwin in the Month of August last did illegally seize into your hands the Goods, Chattles, Merchandize belonging to the sd Philip English and others, praying that you the sd George Corwin might be ordered to appear before me and bring a true Inventory of the same.
