Portraits of Sir Samuel Luke

A portrait of Luke is in the possession of the Corporation of Bedford by whom it was purchased in 1950, with portraits of Luke’s wife, Lady Elizabeth, and their eldest son, Oliver, from Miss Ethel B. Risley, a descendant of Luke’s grand-daughter Elizabeth, fourth wife of William Barber of Adderbury, Oxon. It is this portrait of Luke by Cornelius Jansen which forms the frontispiece to the first volume of I. G. Philip’s Journal of Sir Samuel Luke. An identical portrait of Lady Elizabeth is in the possession of C. R. Parry-Crooke, Esq., of Friston, Suffolk, a descendant of Luke’s grand-daughter Mary who in 1686 married William Stewart, cousin of the Earl of Galloway.

A portrait of Luke by Gerard Soest was formerly in the possession of the Dukes of Bedford but in 1954 was presented to the Bedfordshire County Council for exhibition in the Moot Hall at Elstow near Bedford. The Soest portrait is reproduced as the frontispiece to this Calendar.
