Summary

Over recent decades, it has become increasingly apparent that the resources and expertise housed in disparate sectors and industries will have to be coordinated in some fashion to meet our global society’s most pressing needs. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) bring together the resources of public private and nongovernmental/nonprofit entities with the intent to address the wide range of critical issues such as those highlighted by the United Nations. The leveraging of PPPs has proven significant over the years and played a central role in addressing the United Nations 2000 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the subsequent 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While data suggest that the goals have been effective in alleviating some of the substantial challenges for which they were designed, there is also compelling evidence that suggests that – when executed effectively – PPPs deliver the most value to projects with inclusive participation from all parties, co-creation among key players, and transparency and accountability of roles. This chapter examines the overall challenges, successes and lessons learned of PPP involvement in the United Nations development goals.
