Summary

Note: The pre-treatment assessment interview (hereafter assessment interview) is usually conducted on an individual basis between a TGCTA clinician who will be facilitating the group or individual sessions, and a prospective youth participant. Primary aims of this interview include the following: (1) Gathering information needed to determine whether TGCTA is an appropriate treatment for this particular youth, or whether a referral for other services is appropriate. If TGCTA is indicated, then: (2) Gathering information relevant to deciding which modality (group versus individual) is most appropriate. (3) Gathering information regarding traumatic experiences and/or losses, and ranking them according to their severity/current impact to decide which will be a primary focus of treatment. (4) Beginning to build an “adolescent-friendly” shared vocabulary for describing traumatic experiences, losses, and their consequences. (5) Building trust, therapeutic rapport, and teamwork, which you will draw on in subsequent sessions.
