Summary

This chapter reviews some of the most commonly used first-line antidepressant drug options, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). For patients who do not completely remit on an SSRI or SNRI, oftentimes augmentation and/or combinations are introduced or the patient is switched to a second-line treatment. This concept is developed in further detail in later chapters. Here, each of the six drugs in the SSRI class and each of the four drugs in the SNRI class is reviewed.
