Summary
Businesses have a broad range of uses for FOIA. Considering the vast wealth of regulatory, industry, and government transaction-related information held by federal agencies, it should come as no surprise that for-profit enterprises have found great utility in obtaining government information. This is particularly true at large regulatory agencies. While some public and private oversight uses occasionally crop up, discussed in greater detail in Chapter 3, this chapter will demonstrate that the vast majority of commercial requesters are seeking records for private purposes, that is to directly feed into their profit-making activities.
