Summary

This chapter introduces a rationale for a new model of analysis of spelling variation from a long-diachronic perspective, which promises to provide new insights into some of the core processes underlying spelling developments between 1500 and 1750. The author departs from an assessment of some of the conceptual problems existing in traditional approaches to studying spelling variation quantitatively, and illustrates how these limitations may have a profound effect on our perception of the process of change and development in spelling. The results discussed in the chapter are pivotal for an assessment of the extent to which new methodologies can be used comparatively across corpora and variant pairs.
