Summary

Televisual dialogue fulfils a range of functions that are ultimately aimed at the audience. This chapter delves deeper into what these functions might be, introducing and discussing a new functional approach to television series (FATS). It first provides a brief overview of previous research on the functions of dialogue in telecinematic discourse before introducing the new model using multiple examples, mainly from the Sydney Corpus of Television Dialogue (SydTV). The chapter focuses on functions relating to the communication of the narrative (settings and happenings; characterisation).
