Summary

Bordered by three seas – the Persian Gulf, the Indian Sea, and the Red Sea – and not far from the Mediterranean, Arabia was already serving as a bridge between these seas and between continents during the third and second millennia, thanks to the development of seagoing vessels and the organization of caravans, as well as exports in local luxury goods. These processes led to the flowering of an urban culture using writing in western Arabia during the first millennium bce.
