Summary

This contribution introduces the idea that the care for the social and natural environment described by Pope Francis in the Laudato Si’ must extend not only to the physical environment but also to the “onlife”, the blend between real world and digital information. The interconnectedness of social and natural environments is more evident as the relationship between man and nature can be artificially shaped by digital technologies. Augmented Reality transforms man’s cognitive experience of the natural space. The paradigm of integral ecology in the Laudato Si’ encompasses an ethical approach to the development of new technologies. This approach is particularly fitting for the technologies of the digital age, in light of the invisible, yet profound, environmental consequences they have. In particular, by taking the example of Pókemon Go, an Augmented Reality videogame, this contribution will explore the themes of the encyclical letter connected with the idea of the modification of the human and natural environment brought about by digital technologies.
