Summary
A 38-year-old woman had a long history of an eating disorder and laxative abuse. She smoked 10 cigarettes per day. She was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain and ‘constipation’. Prior to admission, she had been observed to be drinking a lot of water. She had returned from Rome a day before her hospital admission. In hospital, she was agitated. Her admission serum sodium was 102 mmol/L. She was admitted to the High Dependency Unit. The hyponatraemia was corrected (Figure 39.1) initially with normal saline and three-times normal saline but a large diuresis ensued.
