Effect of Height of Directed Applications of Herbicides in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)

Abstract

Diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea], and prometryn [2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-(methylthio)-s-triazine] were applied postemergence in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) 50 cm high as directed sprays covering (a) the furrow and base of cotton plants or (b) covering the lower half of cotton plants. Herbicides directed to the base of plants caused little or no chlorosis of cotton foliage. When applied to the lower half of cotton plants, linuron caused the most injury to foliage; diuron, the least symptoms. Herbicides directed to base or lower half of cotton plants did not significantly reduce yields, alter boll components or fiber properties, and controlled broadleaved weeds.
