1 The first weekly paper to bear the title Spirit of the Times was founded in 1831 by William T. Porter and James Howe. It was “devoted to the pleasures, amusements, fashions, and divertisements of life.” Porter withdrew from this publication in 1856 and with George Wilkes founded Porter's Spirit of the Times. After Porter's death in 1858, the resulting fight over control of the paper resulted in Wilkes taking the staff and founding Wilkes's Spirit of the Times. He dropped his name from the title in 1868; in 1873 he adopted the numbering of the original paper. See Yates, Norris W., William T.
