Call for Proposals for Special Themed Sections

The Beveridge Report plays a crucial part in the history of welfare development in the UK. It highlighted the ‘evils’ against which social policy ought to be directed. It stressed the role of the state in promoting welfare for individuals and society. Over the past eight decades, the idea of the Welfare State has been supported, challenged and reinvented in the UK and elsewhere. There have been numerous debates on how to promote the synergy of collective and individual welfare. Though recent concerns about social welfare have gone much beyond the Five Giant Evils, these remain an essential reference point in Social Policy analysis. All these bear witness to the impacts of the Beveridge Report on our drive to seek social progress. 

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Beveridge Report, Social Policy and Society is calling for proposals for a special series of Themed Sections under the title ‘Towards the Centenary of the Beveridge Report: a debate on the Welfare State for the next 20 years’.  The aim of the series is to enrich and enhance the current welfare state debate by injecting new energy and new insights.  We welcome topics that critically reflect on any under- or unexplored dimensions in contemporary literature or new areas which would be important to the debate in the next decades. The series will be published in 2022 - 2024.

A typical Themed Section includes a short introduction by the Guest Editor(s), a ‘state of the art’ article, four to six articles on related sub-topics and a short ‘Some Useful Resources’ guide. The total word limit is 40,000 words including tables, endnotes and bibliographies.

We welcome proposals from British and international scholars. A proposal will include

• the envisaged title 
• the names and institutional affiliations of the proposed Guest Editor(s)
• a rationale for the Themed Section (no more than two A4 pages in font size 12) 
• a list of contributors and their institutional affiliations
• an ordered list of contents
• the author(s), title and a 500-word abstract of each proposed article.
