The encounter of the spacecraft Voyager 2 with Neptune and its large satellite Triton in August 1989 will provide a crucial test of ideas regarding the origin and chemical composition of the outer solar system. In this pre-encounter paper we quantify the possibility that Triton is a captured moon which, like Pluto and Charon, originally condensed as a major planetesimal within the gas ring that was shed by the contracting protosolar cloud at Neptune’s orbit. Ideas of supersonic convective turbulence are used to compute the gas pressure, temperature and rate of catalytic synthesis of CH4, CO2 and solid carbon within the protosolar cloud, assuming that all C is initially present as CO. The calculations lead to a unique composition for Triton, Pluto, and Charon: each body consists of, by mass, 18.5% solid CO2 ice, 4% graphite, 0.5% CH4 ice, 29% methanated water ice and 48% anhydrous rock. This mix has a density consistent with that of the Pluto-Charon system and yields a predicted mean density for Triton of 2.20±0.05 g cm−3, for satellite radius equal to 1750 km.

The Parkes 64 m telescope has been used to survey a complete sample of nearby red giants (i.e. not members of close binaries or showing strong emission lines of CaII). The sample consisted of all 82 stars in the Bright Star Catalogue within 30 pc having spectral types G, K, M and luminosity classes I, II, III south of the celestial equator.

An analysis has been made of events recorded in one year from the direction of the active galaxy Centaurus A using the Buckland Park UHE gamma-ray telescope. No statistically significant excess was observed over this period. Data collected between 1984 and 1989 show evidence for an excess of events from this direction at shower sizes in the range of 2 × 105 to 5 × 105 particles.

Recent observational results are presented which strongly suggest that a much wider range of upper-main-sequence stars have appreciable surface magnetic fields than has previously been believed.

The extreme isotropy of cosmic ray events allows one to put upper limits on any possible non-isotropic contribution to the flux. In particular, one can investigate any excess of events which may be confined to the galactic plane. Such extra events would be expected from galactic ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources. Under the assumption of an isotropic cosmic ray flux, recent Buckland Park data place a 95% confidence level limit on the total southern hemisphere (declination −15° to −55°) flux of UHE gamma-rays at between 0.6 and 6 equivalent Cygnus X-3 sources, depending on assumptions concerning the gamma-ray spectrum.

We present a list of bright (< 17 mag) southern QSOs and bright (< 11 mag) stars that may be suitable for the Hubble Space Telescope link between the Hipparcos astrometric reference frame and the VLBI extragalactic frame. The QSOs have been selected from various lists of radio objects and identifications. The stars have been selected from the Strasbourg (CDS) data base and from the Preliminary Second Cape Photographic Catalogue, and supplemented with stars measured from the SERC IIIa-J Schmidt survey. The list of QSOs and stars have been included in the Hipparcos and HST schedule of observations.

Analysis of surface and underground detector data from Mawson and Hobart for the period 1982 to 1988 has revealed a number of episodes of enhanced diurnal variation lasting more than 5 days. A preliminary study of these enhancements shows that variations in the rigidity spectrum and in the upper limiting rigidity must be present to explain the phenomenon.

We present maps in the visible emission lines of [S II] and the infrared emission lines of H2, at 2.12μm, for several bipolar outflow complexes which exhibit jet structures. A comparison of the morphology of this infrared emission and that seen in visible emission lines shows both the visible and the H2 emission exhibit clumpy structure on similar scales. It appears that the brightest H2 emission occurs at the working surfaces of the jets. Virtually no H2 emission is associated with the jets themselves.

Velocity profiles are presented for several objects and possible emission mechanisms are discussed.

This paper describes the SPICA array at Akeno, and discusses recent efforts made to improve the angular resolution of the array, concentrating on the determination of the departure of the shower front from a plane. Future research plans are also outlined.

This is a brief description of the way I see the Schmidt functioning through the next three years. There are four important functions which must be maintained: (a) The Science from the Schmidt material must continue to be of the same high quality as that on which the Schmidt’s reputation has been built; (b) The service we provide to the Australian and British communities must continue despite the new trim (slim) appearance of the Schmidt staff and budget; (c) We must maintain our links with ROE, its Plate Library, which is the archive for Schmidt plate material, and Photolabs which provide some of the survey atlases; (d) We are being actively encouraged to promote Australian and British usage of the UK’s large measuring machines APM and COSMOS. Additionally, we are continually being encouraged to improve our efficiency. There is still at least one area in which we can do this and this is discussed.

Optical spectra of pre-main sequence flare stars in Orion are presented and analysed by the use of stellar chromospheric models. The stars observed divide into three groups on the basis of their quiescent spectra. The majority of the sample are similar to the dMe stars, with prominent Ca II and Balmer line emission. A second group possesses very strong emission spectra, including He I lines. Stars in third group, however, show little or no emission spectrum. Amongst the emission line stars observed progressively brighter stars exhibit increased Ca II and Balmer line surface fluxes relative to the fainter stars. This trend is also exhibited as a rise in emission line surface fluxes with increasing effective temperature. To analyse this trend a set of non-LTE stellar models were calculated. Using this analysis the trend in line fluxes between stars of different brightness and temperature is interpreted as a spread in the level of chromospheric heating. Furthermore, this trend is interpreted as indicating a spread in the effectiveness of the stellar magnetic dynamos within these stars, perhaps arising from shallowing in their convective layers as they contract to the main sequence.

The Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), operating at a frequency of 843 MHz, is currently surveying the southern galactic plane between 245° <l<360° and −1.5°<b<1.5°. The resolution of the survey is 43″ (HPBW), providing radio continuum maps of unprecedented resolution and sensitivity (1 mJy/beam) in this part of the sky. The survey involves 12-hour synthesis observations of over four hundred fields, each extending over one degree. Eighty of these have been mapped in the past year, bringing the number now completed to three hundred. The survey is revealing many faint structures with intriguing morphology, including filamentary emission associated with the Vela supernova remnant, and a number of very weak (<5 mJy/beam) disc-like objects.

The appearance of SN 1987A led to the implementation of a fast sampling option in the data collection system of the photometer on the University of Tasmania’s optical telescope. This option permits acquisition of continuous data trains of over one hour’s duration at sample rates of 5 kHz. Monitoring of SN 1987 A at regular intervals has permitted upper limits to be assigned to any pulsed fraction of the optical flux. Successful test observations of the Crab pulsar have been obtained, as well as observations of the geostationary Aussat satellites during their bi-annual specular-reflection episodes. For the latter, very accurate spin rates (∼1 Hz) are determinable in short data runs because of the higher frequency components (∼100 Hz) in their light curves. These components are produced by the rows of solar cells on the outer surfaces of the satellites, and fast-Fourier transform analyses essentially permit the numbers of rows of cells to be counted precisely.

We have constructed theoretical spherical dust shell models using a full radiative transfer treatment, to investigate the effect of thermal emission on the strengths of molecular CO and H2O features in late type stars with circumstellar dust shells and to establish the optical depth at which the strengths of the bands are significantly affected. In this study, for the first time the central sources have been represented by realistic atmospheric models for cool stars in the temperature range 2500–3000 K, which are representative of the central stars of OH/IR sources. Parameters of the dust shell models were chosen to fit the observed run of colours from 1.25–5 μm of a large sample of OH/IR sources using ‘dirty silicate opacities’. The results show that the molecular band strengths in the 2 μm region are significantly affected by the dust emission only when the optical depth in the shell reaches a value of τ1μm ≈2 for T* = 2500 K and somewhat less for T* = 3000 K. However, the changes are such that the distinction between supergiant-like spectra, and variable M-star spectra is retained in models with very high shell optical depths. The implications of these models are discussed in relation to previous observations of OH/IR sources.

We report on a new method of determining radio source positions with the Parkes radio telescope. The method is appreciably quicker than, but has a comparable accuracy to, established methods such as orthogonal scanning. It has been particularly useful during 1989 in tracking the Voyager II spacecraft as it approaches Neptune; a method of accurately pointing at the source of the radio signal was required without the signal degradation which is introduced by moving appreciably off source.

The binary X-ray source GX 1 + 4 was observed during a balloon flight in 1986, November. The source was in a relatively high intensity state. Time analysis of the data shows that the pulsation period was 111.8 ± 1.0 s indicating that one or more episodes of spin-down occurred between 1980 and 1986. Folded pulse profiles are very broad with an indication of a notch at the peak. Evidence has been found for a correlation between hard X-ray intensity and phase of the proposed 304 day orbital period. The time averaged intensity since 1980 is an order of magnitude lower than during the 1970’s. A survey of the post 1980 data shows that several reversals of the period derivative have occurred. Spin-up at the rates typical of the 1970’s has been followed by a dramatic spin-down episode with dP/dt>2.4 × 10−7 s/s.

The University of NSW Automated Patrol Telescope (APT), a modified 0.5 m Baker-Nunn Schmidt telescope situated at Siding Spring Observatory, Coonabarabran, Australia, was opened in June 1989. It features the unique combination of an extremely fast (f/1) optical system with a CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) camera at the prime focus, capable of both fast (50 Hz TV-rate) imaging and slow-scan integrated readout via a low noise Correlated Double Sampling amplifier. This combination of optics and detector gives a wide field (0.9° × 1.4°) suited to observing extended objects including the LMC, SMC and galaxies in the Sculptor group. First images from the APT are presented along with the results of noise, linearity and dark current measurements made to date with a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter. There are two current models for the typical radio spectra of flare stars, which have a broad peak around a frequency typically 1 – 10 GHz. One model involves both optically thick and optically thin emission, with the turnover attributed to the source becoming self-absorbed. The other model involves only emission at optical depth unity, so that observing different frequencies corresponds to ‘seeing’ different regions in the source. The two models are reviewed, and new calculations for an inhomogeneous source presented.

We propose to construct an optical interferometer to produce high resolution images by aperture synthesis. The interferometer, known as the Masked Aperture Pupil-Plane Interference Telescope (MAPPIT), will be mounted at the coudé focus of the Anglo-Australian Telescope. It will use a non-redundant aperture mask, together with closure phase methods developed for radio VLBI, to overcome the wavefront distortions which are introduced by atmospheric turbulence. By using the techniques of pupil-plane interferometry and wavelength dispersion, it is hoped that MAPPIT will have more sensitivity than many other interferometric imaging projects.

It is shown that real-time FFT techniques used in conjunction with a small telescope can yield useful sensitivity. The suitability of the Crab pulsar as a calibrator is assessed. The mains frequency modulation in the night sky above Perth is clearly discerned, with several harmonics. Detectable signal modulation limits for SN 1987A are derived as a function of frequency in the range 10-2000 Hz.
